They also asserted that all the company\u2019s data was stored on servers in the United States; prosecutors in Los Angeles, who brought the charges against Mr. Yu, said that they had found some company data stored on servers in China. The Times is continuing to report on this story,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>A New York Times spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Stuart A. Thompson, a New York Times reporter who says he focuses on misinformation and disinformation, penned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/03\/technology\/konnech-election-conspiracy-theories.html\">the Oct. 3 article<\/a> as well as an article on the charges against Konnech.<\/p>\n<p>In the former, Thompson claimed that an election integrity group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-true-the-vote\">True the Vote<\/a>, and others had \u201cthreadbare evidence, or none at all,\u201d against Konnech.<\/p>\n<p>He opined that the allegations \u201cdemonstrate how far-right election deniers are also giving more attention to new and more secondary companies and groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only evidence backing Thompson\u2019s article were statements from Konnech and\u00a0Dele Lowman Smith, the chair of the election board in DeKalb County, Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>That board signed a contract with Konnech in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a completely fabricated issue,\u201d Smith told the New York Times. \u201cIt\u2019s absolutely bizarre, but it\u2019s part of the tone and tenor of what we\u2019re having to deal with leading up to the elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The board was holding a special meeting on Oct. 10 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/after-election-firm-ceos-arrest-republicans-push-to-terminate-contract-with-georgia-county_4780527.html\">discuss the contract<\/a> in the wake of the charges being filed. Another county, in Virginia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/exclusive-virginia-county-stops-using-konnech-election-software-following-ceos-arrest_4780364.html\">has already halted its use<\/a> of Konnech software.<\/p>\n<p>Gascon, a Democrat, alleged that Yu, the Konnech CEO, stole personal identifying information of Los Angeles County election workers and stored the data on servers in China.\u00a0Konnech did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cData breaches are an ongoing threat to our digital way of life. When we entrust a company to hold our confidential data, they must be willing and able to protect our personal identifying information from theft. Otherwise, we are all victims,\u201d Gascon said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson, the New York Times reporter, wrote a story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/04\/technology\/election-software-arrested.html\">on Oct. 4<\/a> about the charges. He said that Konnech had denied keeping data outside the United States and that the company had \u201crebutted\u201d claims that it stored data on servers in China. He referred to Catherine Engelbrecht, the founder of True the Vote, as an \u201celection denier.\u201d But he did not use the term \u201cconspiracy theory\u201d in the new article.<\/p>\n<p>True the Vote said in a statement that Yu \u201cwas arrested based on alleged evidence of the very activities he and his organization attempted to suppress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKonnech was assisted by many reporters who unblinkingly accepted their now discredited claims as fact, and simply repeated them,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson could not be reached. He has not alerted followers on Twitter to the editor\u2019s note.
