(Photo by Tasos Katopodis\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OAN Newsroom<br \/>UPDATED 6:02 PM PT \u2013 Monday, October 10, 2022<\/p>\n<p>Former United Nations Ambassador Bill Richardson has suggested that jailed Americans, Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, could soon be released.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\">\n<\/div>\n<p>During an interview with CNN State of the Union on Sunday, Richardson said that he hopes for their safe return.<\/p>\n<p>The former New Mexico Governor runs the Richardson Center. The Center works with American families on hostage negotiations and prisoner releases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Griner was sentenced to nine years in Russia after pleading guilty to drug-smuggling charges. Whelan is currently serving a 16-year sentence for espionage charges.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI am cautiously optimistic on the Griner, Whelan negotiations,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it\u2019s going to be a two for two. I don\u2019t want to get into with who I met with; it was Senior Russian Officials; individuals close to President Putin. I\u2019ve coordinated with the White House, I\u2019ve coordinated as much, but sometimes they\u2019re a little nervous. My doing this on my own but at the same time we\u2019ve had success recently.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That success includes the release of Marine Trevor Reed from Russian custody earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Richardson believes that Griner and Whelan could be released by the end of the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson speaks at the Conference on Iran on May 5, 2018 in Washington, DC.
