Maybe it&#8217;s a favorite sugary cereal, a classic video game, or a toy that can now only be found on eBay. So fondly, in fact, that one person compared it to the &#8220;<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2017\/07\/the-tastiest-medicine\/533937\/\" target=\"_blank\">Proustian madeleine<\/a>&#8221; in an article published by <em>The Atlantic<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Several people mentioned to me that the flavor they most associated with childhood illness was that of grape Dimetapp cough syrup,&#8221; author <strong>Julie Beck<\/strong> mused. She then tried Dimetapp as an adult, offering this report: &#8220;My adult assessment is that it tastes pretty good. The American Academy of Pediatrics calls them &#8220;<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/skin\/Pages\/Pinworms.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">unpleasant to look at<\/a>,&#8221; but another way to describe them is &#8220;the stuff nightmares are made of.&#8221; They cause itching, but are otherwise harmless, and can be treated with an oral medication that&#8217;s available in both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) form.<\/p>\n<p>However, someone had the great idea to make the medicine banana flavored. Yum! Luden&#8217;s cough drops in the tantalizing &#8220;wild cherry&#8221; flavor (not just cherry, mind you\u2014<em>wild<\/em> cherry) didn&#8217;t taste particularly menthol-y or medicinal in any way (I see you, Ricola!), but apparently they contain <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rxlist.com\/consumer_ludens_moisture_drops\/drugs-condition.htm\" target=\"_blank\">an oral demulcant<\/a> that really can help soothe a sore throat or persistent cough. The color indicated bubblegum, but it tasted like\u2026 mint? As kids, we didn&#8217;t stop to ruminate about this mystery, instead focusing on the fact that maybe\u2014just maybe\u2014Pepto Bismol would stop us from barfing.<\/p>\n<p>In an article on the topic, the <em>LA Times<\/em> called Pepto Bismol &#8220;Probably the only substance on the planet that looks like bubble gum but <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/food\/sns-dailymeal-1870616-eat-we-bet-you-have-no-idea-why-pepto-bismol-mint-flavored-20180209-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">tastes like mint<\/a>,&#8221; and explained that the original formula contained stomach-soothing wintergreen oil. They came in different colors and in the forms of different characters, although it was difficult to tell them apart.
