John Durham was asked to step down as the U.S. attorney for Connecticut but <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/judge-durham-cant-use-danchenko-russian-intel-links-trial\">was kept on as special counsel<\/a><\/u> for his criminal review of the Trump-Russia investigation. <\/p>\n<p>Hunter Biden revealed he was under <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/doj-inspecting-hunter-biden-for-potential-foreign-lobbying-violations-report\">federal investigation<\/a><\/u> in Delaware for his taxes shortly after the 2020 election, saying: \u201cI am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The younger Biden is also <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/doj-inspecting-hunter-biden-for-potential-foreign-lobbying-violations-report\">reportedly<\/a><\/u> being scrutinized for possible money laundering, as well as possible foreign lobbying violations <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/nsd-fara\">under<\/a><\/u> the Foreign Agents Registration Act. <\/p>\n<p>Trump announced his intent to appoint Weiss on Nov. 17, 2017, with the White House <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov\/presidential-actions\/president-donald-j-trump-announces-ninth-wave-united-states-attorney-nominations-third-wave-united-states-marshal-nominations\/\">saying<\/a> the prosecutor shared Trump\u2019s \u201cvision\u201d for \u201cMaking America Safe Again.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Weiss had already taken over as acting U.S. attorney in March 2017 after then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions asked Weiss\u2019s predecessor, Charles Oberly, and 45 other U.S. attorneys appointed by President Barack Obama to <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.delawareonline.com\/story\/news\/local\/2017\/03\/11\/us-attorney-delaware-charles-oberly-asked-resign\/99051952\/\">submit their resignations.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>Delaware Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons, both Democrats, had urged Trump to accept their proposed nomination of Weiss for the role and <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.delawareonline.com\/story\/news\/2018\/02\/23\/david-weiss-sworn-delaware-u-s-attorney\/365304002\/\">praised his selection.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid Weiss is an excellent choice for U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware,\u201d Carper said. \u201cDuring his combined 16 years in the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office, he has prosecuted corruption, money laundering, drug offenses, mail and wire fraud, and he spearheaded the successful effort to establish New Castle County as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Coons declared: &#8220;David is a career prosecutor and dedicated public servant, longtime Delawarean, and valued member of our law enforcement community. I want to thank the White House for working with Senator Carper and me to present an excellent nominee for U.S. Attorney.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Weiss was easily confirmed in a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/floor_activity\/2018\/02_15_2018_Senate_Floor.htm\">voice vote<\/a> by the Senate on Feb. 15, 2018. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honored to have the opportunity to serve the people of Delaware as United States Attorney,\u201d Weiss <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wdel.com\/news\/the-united-states-attorney-for-delaware-has-been-confirmed\/article_26f4bf3c-1850-11e8-91b2-8733b53f3088.html\">said<\/a> after his confirmation. \u201cI am thankful to President Trump for this appointment and to Senators Carper and Coons for their continued support throughout the confirmation process.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Weiss had <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-de\/meet-us-attorney\">previously<\/a> twice served as first assistant U.S. attorney from 2007 to 2009 and then from 2012 to 2018, and he also had been the acting and interim U.S. attorney under Obama from 2009 to 2011. <\/p>\n<p>He <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-de\/meet-us-attorney\">attended<\/a> the Washington University in St. Louis as an undergraduate and went to the Widener University School of Law. After graduating law school, he worked as a law clerk for then-Justice Andrew Christie of the Delaware Supreme Court in 1984, then as an assistant U.S. attorney from 1986 to 1989. He also spent years in private practice. <\/p>\n<p>The task before Weiss is politically fraught, and his investigation has been largely opaque. <\/p>\n<p>Biden held a lucrative position on the board of Ukrainian energy giant Burisma when his father was vice president. He also pursued business deals in China and elsewhere during and after his father\u2019s tenure, <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/news\/remarks\/grassley-johnson-release-bank-records-tying-biden-family-to-ccp-linked-individuals-and-companies\">raking in millions<\/a><\/u> thanks to these associations. <\/p>\n<p>Records show the younger Biden believed some of his Chinese business partners were <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/spy-chief-of-china-laptop-recording-sheds-light-on-hunter-bidens-overseas-business\">connected to Chinese intelligence<\/a> and that he <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/joe-biden-hunter-china-business-deal-voicemail\">worried about the Foreign Agents Registration Act<\/a><\/u>. <\/p>\n<p>Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) have demanded the <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/justice-department\">Justice Department<\/a><\/u> and the <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/fbi\">FBI<\/a><\/u> to <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/hunter-biden-laptop-investigation-grassley-johnson-doj-fbi\">launch a full investigation into Biden&#8217;s laptop<\/a><\/u>, including the revelation unearthed by the <i>Washington Examiner<\/i> that Joe Biden apparently <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/hunter-biden-russian-escorts-joe-payments\">unwittingly financed his son\u2019s participation in an escort ring tied to Russia<\/a><\/u>. <\/p>\n<p>Whistleblower allegations emerged in July that FBI supervisory intelligence agent <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/fbi-analyst-disciplinary-review-fisa-hunter-biden-assessment\">Brian Auten<\/a> opened an assessment in August 2020, which was used by FBI headquarters to label accurate information about Hunter Biden as false, according to disclosures made public by Grassley. A whistleblower said <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/grassley-raises-alarm-over-partisan-social-media-posts-linked-to-fbi-official\">Timothy Thibault<\/a><\/u>, the now-former FBI assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/fbi-whistleblower-claims-thibault-mystery-hunter-biden-evidence-grassley\">shut down a line of inquiry into the younger Biden<\/a> in October 2020 despite some of the details being known to be true at the time. <\/p>\n<p>FBI Director Christopher Wray said he <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/wray-fbi-whistleblower-claims-hunter-biden-inquiry-deeply-troubling\">found these whistleblower allegations &#8220;deeply troubling\u201d<\/a><\/u> when asked about them in early August. <\/p>\n<p>Grassley has said the FBI investigation into Biden <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/hunter-biden-prosecutor-may-lack-key-information-gop-senator-warns\">may now be hobbled because of<\/a><\/u> the actions taken inside the bureau to limit the inquiry. <\/p>\n<p>In May, Grassley and Johnson <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/grassley-and-johnson-want-answers-from-us-attorney-handling-hunter-biden-case\/\">sent<\/a><\/u> a <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/grassley_johnson_to_delaware_usa_-_biden_investigation.pdf\">letter<\/a><\/u> to Weiss, asking about possible conflicts of interest and the existence of recusals within the Justice Department, raised concerns about the president\u2019s son\u2019s claims of judicial influence in Delaware, pressed the federal prosecutor on whether he was being properly supported by the DOJ, and inquired about what steps he had taken during his investigation, including whether he had issued grand jury subpoenas related to Biden&#8217;s Chinese business dealings. <\/p>\n<p>DOJ headquarters was clearly alerted to the letter, because it was it, not Weiss, that responded to Grassley and Johnson, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/doj-blocks-gop-effort-answers-hunter-biden-investigation\">largely denying their requests for information.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\">CLICK HERE TO READ MORE FROM THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>Then-Attorney General William Barr <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/barr-rejects-special-counsels-for-hunter-biden-or-voter-fraud\">rejected the idea of a special counsel to investigate Biden<\/a> in December 2020, but now says Attorney General Merrick Garland <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/barr-special-counsel-protections-needed-attorney-hunter-biden\">should grant those powers to Weiss.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Dozens of Senate Republicans have said Weiss <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/hunter-biden-investigation-president-joe-special-counsel-gop\">must be given special counsel protections and authorities<\/a><\/u>, and dozens of House Republicans called upon Garland to <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/dozens-of-republicans-call-for-garland-to-appoint-hunter-biden-special-counsel\">appoint a special counsel for the investigation<\/a><\/u>. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He is supervising the investigation,&#8221; Garland <u><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?519718-1\/department-justice-fiscal-year-2023-budget-request\">said<\/a><\/u> of Weiss in April. \u201cThere will not be interference of any political or improper kind.&#8221;
