Now, the far-Left Hollywood reporter is asking Stoller and \u201cBros\u201d co-star Guy Branum<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/bros-director-producer-opening-weekend-interview-1235235683\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> what explains the box office results.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Branum claims his marketing ideas were roundly rejected by Universal, the studio behind the film. Stoller struggles to process the movie\u2019s commercial misfire, citing critical raves for the film (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/bros_2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">89 percent \u201cfresh\u201d at Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>) and positive test screenings.<\/p>\n<p>Eichner blamed the straight community for ignoring his film (he co-wrote the screenplay with Stoller). Stoller confirms Eichner\u2019s comments, citing data privy to Universal. The dismal numbers still show most gay Americans chose other movie options last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The director trotted out other reasons for the film\u2019s failure, including his assertion that Hollywood has \u201ctrained\u201d audiences not to see comedy in theaters.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s certainly not true of the pre-woke era. Comedies routinely crashed the $100 million mark at the U.S. box office. Think:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<strong>Bridesmaids<\/strong>\u201d ($169 million)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<strong>The Hangover 1, 2 and 3<\/strong>\u201d ($277 million, $254 million, $112 million, respectively)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<strong>Step Brothers<\/strong>\u201d ($100 million)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<strong>Ted<\/strong>\u201d ($218 million)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<strong>22 Jump Street<\/strong>\u201d ($191 million)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<strong>Neighbors<\/strong>\u201d ($150 million)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<strong>Pitch Perfect 2 and 3<\/strong>\u201d ($184 million, $104 million, respectively)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stoller partially blames audiences for not seeking his film out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very strange just because the movie is so much fun. And as someone who makes comedies for movie theaters \u2014 or did until, I guess, this weekend \u2014 I love seeing comedies in movie theaters, and people do. It\u2019s almost like <strong>people don\u2019t know what\u2019s good for them<\/strong>. [emphasis added]\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stoller turned his wannabe franchise \u201cNeighbors\u201d into a woke affair, hiring two female screenwriters to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/how-feminism-crushed-neighbors-2\/\">bolster its feminist bona fides<\/a>. That sequel, \u201cNeighbors 2: Sorority Rising,\u201d made $95 million less than its predecessor, killing the franchise in the process.<\/p>\n<p>What the \u201cBros\u201d director doesn\u2019t realize is how the culture is to blame for \u201cBros\u201d failure. Big screen comedies can no longer entertain like they once did. Even tepid fare like \u201cSnatched\u201d and \u201cGet Hard\u201d endure withering reviews for being \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/schumer-snatched-not-woke-critics\/\">problematic<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That mindset handcuffs artists, reducing the jokes they can tell in the process. Even far-Left comics like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/desus-mero-self-censor-cancel-culture\/\">\u201cDesus &#038; Mero\u201d self-censor<\/a> for fear of Cancel Culture fallout.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also why \u201cHangover\u201d director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/joker-todd-phillips-woke-culture-comedies\/\">Todd Phillips left the genre to direct 2019\u2019s \u201cJoker.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Stoller ignores how too many Hollywood stars alienate potential audiences. That \u201cBros\u201d trailer suggests the film is more of the same, mocking straight people, extolling an LGBTQ+ museum subplot and proudly sharing characters engaged in a \u201cthrouple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cBros\u201d director\u2019s comic timing remains on-point throughout his new film.
