And while some have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/cities-reverse-defunding-the-police-amid-rising-crime-11622066307\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">since backpedaled<\/a> as violent crime kept soaring, these policies have <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/national-security\/562233-defunding-police-amidst-skyrocketing-gun-crime-is-a-national\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already wreaked havoc<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>So, <em>who<\/em> <em>exactly are<\/em> the Democrats who recklessly endorsed the defund movement?<\/p>\n<p>The answer, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manhattan-institute.org\/is-defunding-the-police-a-luxury-belief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> I recently published for the Manhattan Institute, is who you probably suspect \u2014 but perhaps not for the reasons you think. After all, whites and Asians are the two most affluent demographic cohorts among Democrats. And while support for depolicing substantially declines among non-white Democrats in areas with higher crime, support among white Democrats either holds steady or, remarkably, increases in these locales. This remains the case whether they are living in white neighborhoods, or diverse ones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, if higher socioeconomic status and greater insulation from violent crime do not entirely explain the white vs. non-white \u201cwokeness gap,\u201d what does?\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/jb-pritzker.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/jb-pritzker.jpg\" alt=\"Illinois Governor J.B. Particularly in the aftermath of high-profile racialized police incidents (such as Floyd\u2019s death), white Democrats \u2014 who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/sections\/news\/articles\/americas-white-saviors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">score high on measures of collective shame and guilt<\/a> \u2014 become fixated on distinguishing themselves as \u201cgood white people,\u201d who are doing <em>something<\/em> (however counterproductive) to protect minorities from the \u201cracist\u201d institutions that \u201cvictimize\u201d them. With nothing to \u201cprove,\u201d their policy positions are much less subject to ideological constraints. As the risks of depolicing increase, especially in high-crime areas, they\u2019re free to abandon their support for the movement. And they do. <\/p>\n<p>Of course, none of this changes the actual consequences of depolicing, which disproportionately affect poorer classes. But these findings should at least give pause to those who dismiss white depolicers as \u201climousine\u201d liberals supporting \u201cvirtuous\u201d policies without having to live under them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The reality might be even more disturbing: Gripped by \u201cwhite savior\u201d ideology, they may actually be willing to endure the consequences for what they falsely perceive will bring about equity and justice.
