Patty Murray (D., Ore.), who used a <em>Times<\/em> headline as recently as 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W478Alr-ZCM&amp;t=16s&amp;ab_channel=pattymurrayforsenate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for an ad<\/a>. The <em>Times<\/em> endorsed Murray in her last four elections.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Times<\/em>\u2018s objection seems to be based on a new standard. Rep. Kim Schrier (D., Wash.) used one of the paper\u2019s headlines in an ad during her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IRF45yBcWh0&amp;t=59s&amp;ab_channel=Dr.KimSchrier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 run for Congress<\/a>. When asked whether Schrier\u2019s ad created the same mistaken impression about an endorsement, a senior vice president at the <em>Seattle Times<\/em> told the <em>Washington<\/em> <em>Free Beacon<\/em>, &#8220;We\u2019ll decline further comment on this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Times <\/em>is the latest entity to make such a demand of the Smiley campaign. Starbucks took issue with the <em>Times <\/em>headline that featured its name. And in September, the Seattle Seahawks complained that Smiley\u2019s husband, a disabled Army veteran, wore a team jersey in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g7st-x0xWHw&amp;ab_channel=SmileyforWashington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another ad<\/a>. The team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seahawks.com\/video\/12-flag-raiser-interview-major-scott-smiley-102901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gave<\/a> him that jersey at a game honoring military service members in 2014.
