The district is the second-largest in the state with more than 40,000 students.<\/p>\n<p>The parent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skeducationfirst.com\/recalls\">group<\/a>\u00a0formed a political action committee called Salem-Keizer Education First and is targeting board members Ashley Carson-Cottingham, Osvaldo Avila, and Karina Guzm\u00e1n-Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>The recall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.co.marion.or.us\/CO\/elections\/Documents\/SKSD%20Recall%20Petition%20Summary.pdf\">petitions<\/a> state that board members\u00a0want to keep pornographic books in the libraries that portray teenagers engaging in oral sex, allow minors to seek HIV treatment without parental knowledge, allow a child to express their new gender identity at school without notifying parents, and put feminine hygiene products in\u00a0elementary school boys bathrooms.<\/p>\n<p>School safety is also a sticking point for the parents, particularly the elimination of school resource officers amid a rise in disciplinary incidents, and the district\u2019s rules against teachers and the public legally concealed-carrying guns on campus, according to the petitions.<\/p>\n<p>The petitions also stated that board members have allowed \u201chate speech, intimidation, and race-baiting\u201d by special interest groups at board meetings and some prioritize focusing on systemic racism over academic success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents feel intimidated and as though they have no participation rights in the education of their student while having forced differing ideologies taught to their children,\u201d one of the petitions states.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Casity Troutt, the mother\u00a0who filed for the recalls,\u00a0has\u00a0two children attending district schools and said there is a lack of transparency around the curriculum, and children are suffering academically.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe amount of learning loss that has occurred\u00a0over the past couple \u00a0\u2018pandemic years\u2019 is astonishing. Our children are not being educated,\u201d Troutt told The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe need to stop focusing on social and emotional learning, restorative justice practices, and lowering the standards\u00a0in the name of \u2018equity\u2019 and start educating our children,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Troutt also cited the \u201cvolatile and hostile behavior\u201d of\u00a0a local activist <a href=\"https:\/\/lusyouthorg.wordpress.com\/2013\/05\/21\/tuition-equity-in-oregon\/\">group<\/a> called Latinos Unidos Siempre (LUS) towards parents.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Protesters shouted Troutt down as she spoke at one meeting, video footage of one meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hxlvRx8LwSw\">shows<\/a>. After Troutt spoke, several LUS activists also took the podium.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Troutt and another mom who attended that meeting said LUS activists followed parents to their cars and took pictures of their license plates.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt was just really scary and just nothing that I\u2019ve ever experienced before,\u201d the mom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hxlvRx8LwSw\">told<\/a> KGW News.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Meanwhile, Troutt has received threats to her life on social media, and the district has done little to discourage them, she said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAnybody got a home address or a photo of the b****?\u201d one Twitter user <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220901224129\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/Zelda_in_black\/status\/1565469804038787074\">tweeted<\/a> along with a photo of a gun being loaded that was captioned, \u201cCan\u2019t expect God to do all the work.\u201d\u00a0The tweet was in response to another tweet saying Troutt had made \u201cvile comments\u201d at the last school board meeting.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Troutt emailed the district on Sep. 2 about her safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">School board <a href=\"https:\/\/salkeiz.k12.or.us\/schoolboard\/\">member<\/a> Osvaldo Avila responded to Troutt the next day in an email viewed by The Daily Wire saying that it is \u201cvery unfortunate that you\u2019re having to receive these harmful threats from your actions\u201d and there is \u201cno justifiable reason that you should be threatened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Avila said he expects the\u00a0district to have \u201csecurity measures in place as always,\u201d but carrying firearms is unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThere should never be a reason to resort to carrying weapons such as guns to say we need to protect ourselves as we do not live in a war zone. Hope you stay safe, and no harm comes to you or your family,\u201d Avila wrote.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s not just parents who are frustrated. Several school board members join them in their concerns.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe went from a community that valued the unique abilities and challenges of each student to a hyper focused agenda driven environment,\u201d board member Danielle Bethell told The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>School safety incidents are at an \u201call time high\u201d due to the removal of school resource officers, but academic success is at an \u201call time low\u201d because of issues including equity grading and the elimination of honors courses, she said. In addition, the Oregon education department focuses on sexuality, gender, and race, Bethell said.<\/p>\n<p>Board member Marty Heyen said she agrees with Bethell and supports \u201cparents doing whatever they need to do legally in support of their children,\u201d she\u00a0told The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>Board member Satya Chandragiri said he also shares \u201cserious concerns\u201d with parents about learning loss and safety and would like to see the district reach out \u201cintentionally\u201d to the parent group.<\/p>\n<p>None of the three board members targeted in the recall petitions responded to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To get on the ballot, each recall petition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kptv.com\/2022\/09\/06\/petitions-filed-recall-3-salem-keizer-school-board-directors\/\">needs<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parents in Oregon\u2018s capital city are fighting to recall multiple school board members whose progressive policies they say are harming students and families.
