Nor does the word suggest \u201cAmsterdam\u201d is unwatchable. Director David O. Russell\u2019s latest, a sprawling collection of pinpoint comic performances and inconsequential asides, is rarely dull.<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s vibrant morsels, brief but significant, should add up to something special, an artistic gestalt bound for Oscar glory. Russell\u2019s canon suggests just that (\u201cAmerican Hustle,\u201d \u201cThe Fighter,\u201d \u201cSilver Linings Playbook\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Instead, \u201cAmsterdam\u201d stalls in the second act until the big \u201creveal\u201d emerges. That calamitous finale finds Russell abandoning any semblance of subtlety or sophistication.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s as much to admire here as recoil over, but the glorious cast makes \u201cAmsterdam\u201d worth a look. And a certain Dark Knight towers over his peers.<\/p>\n<p>Christian Bale stars as Dr. Burt Berendsen, a physician still grappling with his wounds from the First World War \u2013 including a glass eye that can\u2019t seem to stay in place. The year is 1933, and Burt\u2019s enduring bond with Harold Woodsman (John David Washington), a loyal friend and lawyer, leads him into a terrible jam.<\/p>\n<p>They attempt to help the daughter (Taylor Swift!) of their old wartime leader who died mysteriously en route to the States. She\u2019s murdered before they can discern her father\u2019s fate, and the crime is pinned on them.<\/p>\n<p>Sort of.<\/p>\n<p>The duo must clear their good names, but that plot is forever pushed aside for any number of tangents and flashbacks. First, we learn how Burt and Harold met in the first place, later teaming with the lovely nurse who treated their war wounds.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CjTKtW3JW1g\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s Margot Robbie as Valerie, the third member of the \u201cAmsterdam\u201d trio. Their bond is infectious, but even that can\u2019t be enjoyed at face value.<\/p>\n<p>A larger threat looms, one far more ominous than the murder charge that may fall on our heroes\u2019 heads. Fascism is on the march overseas, and it may be taking root stateside.<\/p>\n<p>That part is true, to a point. Creative license gets a heavy workout here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/american-psycho-review\/\"><strong>RELATED: BALE\u2019S \u2018AMERICAN PSYCHO\u2019 DOESN\u2019T DESERVE OUR LOVE OR PITY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s much more to \u201cAmsterdam,\u201d including a pair of \u201cbird enthusiasts\u201d (Michael Shannon and Mike Myers doing his inimitable British accent), a nurse with a soft spot for Burt (Zoe Saldana, wasted) and a power broker (Rami Malek) and his bubbly bride (Anya Taylor-Joy).<\/p>\n<p>Russell toggles back between past and present, but there\u2019s rarely a sense of urgency here. The exception?<\/p>\n<p>Robert De Niro enters the story as a powerful veteran tasked with making a critical speech. What will he say? Might he be compromised? Can one speech change the world?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of De Niro\u2019s weaker performances, but it\u2019s hardly his fault. By this time in the film Russell has lost control of the narrative, pushing hard on the tale\u2019s anti-fascist rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>By definition, it shouldn\u2019t take much to deplore fascism. It does that and more, expanding to reveal a larger plot that changes the film\u2019s tone. Dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Even worse?<\/p>\n<p>A steady drumbeat of kindness blather betwixt the fascist fear-mongering. It\u2019s important to set aside \u00a0modern Hollywood\u2019s fascistic tendencies regarding language and ideological diversity to fully appreciate the message at play.<\/p>\n<p>The assembled talents think they\u2019re speaking Truth to PowerTM about MAGA nation, something De Niro seems preoccupied with during his character\u2019s big moment.<\/p>\n<p>Could that be what Russell had in mind?<\/p>\n<p>If so, he\u2019s let his ideological biases swamp his screenplay, drowning what could have been the year\u2019s most curious story in the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HiT or Miss<\/strong>: \u201cAmsterdam\u201d boasts the year\u2019s best cast and a fascinating subject (or 12).
