Marymount California University in Rancho Palos Verdes and Becker College in Worcester, Massachusetts, also recently shut their doors. As have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highereddive.com\/news\/how-many-colleges-and-universities-have-closed-since-2016\/539379\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other institutions across<\/a> the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107129645\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCaption\">New Jersey City University<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbedCredit\">Photo Courtesy: Stepanstas | Wikipedia CC<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The number of colleges closing down in the past 10 years has quadrupled compared with the previous decade, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/broke-colleges-resort-to-mergers-for-survival-11658239445\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report in The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Heading into the 2022-2023 academic year, New Jersey City University declared a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.njcu.edu\/about\/news\/2022\/06\/message-njcu-board-trustees-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">financial emergency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A national trend of declining enrollment for college-aged students has resulted in a long-term erosion in the university&#8217;s ability to operate,&#8221; said Joseph Scott, chair of the Jersey City, New Jersey, school&#8217;s board of trustees, in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\">Funding cuts have created a &#8216;crunch&#8217; for smaller schools<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>At the same time, deep cuts in state funding for higher education have pushed more of the costs on to students and paved the way for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/state-budget-and-tax\/state-higher-education-funding-cuts-have-pushed-costs-to-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">significant tuition increases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/08\/09\/with-or-without-student-loan-forgiveness-college-still-costs-too-much.html\">college costs are still rising<\/a>.\u00a0Tuition and fees plus room and board for a four-year private college averaged\u00a0$55,800 in the 2021-2022\u00a0school year; at four-year, in-state public colleges, it was $27,330, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.collegeboard.org\/trends\/college-pricing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">College Board<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed InlineImage-inlineInfographic\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-106552716\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imagePlaceholder\">\n<div><button class=\"InlineImage-closeEnlargedImage\">Arrows pointing outwards<\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;The real issue is that federal support for students and state support for students has been declining,&#8221; said Barbara Mistick, president of the\u00a0National Association\u00a0of Independent Colleges\u00a0and\u00a0Universities. &#8220;It&#8217;s inevitable there will be a crunch somewhere along the line.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Not all schools are struggling, however.
