Gretchen Whitmer, national Republicans are seemingly pulling the plug on seriously supporting Dixon\u2019s campaign, with ad spending from major GOP groups drying up as Election Day approaches. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2022-election\/trumps-pick-governor-michigan-left-fend-money-dries-rcna49636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBC News<\/a>, as of Sept. 28, \u201cWhitmer and the Democratic groups supporting her re-election are crushing Dixon and the GOP in ad spending, $16.5 million to $924,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough Nov. 8, Whitmer and the Democrats have reserved $24 million in ads for the Michigan governor\u2019s race. Republicans have reserved nearly $4 million \u2014 most of it from the Republican Governors Association [(RGA)], which is prioritizing other states even after its co-chairs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rga.org\/rga-statement-tudor-dixons-primary-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cheered Dixon\u2019s nomination<\/a>\u00a0and said they \u2018couldn\u2019t be more excited\u2019 to support her in the general election,\u201d the report reads. \u201cDixon\u2019s campaign has spent just<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>$25,000 on paid ads since the primary. Her campaign\u2019s last finance report showed her with $523,000 on hand, compared to Whitmer\u2019s $14 million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While RGA has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rga.org\/rga-makes-31-4-million-initial-tv-investments-key-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">budgeted<\/a> roughly $3.5 million in ad spending for Dixon\u2019s campaign, the amount is small compared to spending in other gubernatorial races. Back in early August, for instance, the group announced that it would be purchasing <a href=\"https:\/\/tucson.com\/news\/local\/govt-and-politics\/gop-governors-group-to-spend-at-least-11-million-on-arizonas-race\/article_8edf5018-14e9-11ed-80d5-6fde4f6b0067.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$11 million<\/a> worth of commercials in Arizona to ensure that Gov. Doug Ducey\u2019s successor \u201cis of the same political party.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2022\/governor\/mi\/michigan_governor_dixon_vs_whitmer-7545.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legacy media polling<\/a> designed to manipulate the electorate has shown Whitmer with unrealistic leads over Dixon, more accurate firms such as The Trafalgar Group have forecasted the race to be much closer. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrafalgargroup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/MI-Gen-Gov-Poll-Report-0930.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent survey<\/a> from the organization, Whitmer holds nearly a six-point lead over Dixon (50.9 to 45.1 percent), which falls outside of the poll\u2019s 2.9 percent margin of error.<\/p>\n<p>In recent weeks, Dixon has attempted to make <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/29\/parents-rights-in-education-won-the-gop-virginia-in-2021-and-it-can-win-them-the-2022-midterms-too\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">parental rights<\/a> a signature issue of her campaign after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/michigan-education-department-radical-gender-teacher-training?wallit_nosession=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stunning report<\/a> revealed that Whitmer\u2019s Education Department is actively encouraging teachers to \u201csexually transition\u201d students behind their parents\u2019 backs. In addition to calling for the state superintendent\u2019s resignation, Dixon has backed a proposal called the \u201cAge-Appropriate Classroom Instruction Act,\u201d which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tudordixon.com\/media\/tudor-dixon-we-must-remove-classroom-instruction-of-sexual-orientation-gender-identity-for-grades-k-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">would<\/a> \u201crequire school districts to ensure that their schools do not provide classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third grade or in any manner that is not age or developmentally appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When pressed by The Federalist about whether the campaign was concerned about the lack of financial support from national GOP groups when compared to other gubernatorial races, Dixon\u2019s communications director Sara Broadwater emphasized that Dixon \u201chas the full support of RGA and allied groups,\u201d pointing to the reservation of ad space by the RGA-affiliated PAC, \u201cGet Michigan Working Again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTudor is within striking distance after over $23M in ads have been spent against her \u2013 Whitmer knows it\u2019s close, which is why she\u2019s still spending over\u00a0$2.5M a week attacking Tudor,\u201d Broadwater said. \u201cThe reality is that Gretchen and her allies can\u2019t spend away the disaster she has created during her reign over the past four years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also set to appear on Michiganders\u2019 ballots next month are two Democrat-backed amendments that would <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/10\/05\/as-michigan-braces-for-major-abortion-vote-ford-heir-sics-city-government-on-a-churchs-pro-life-signs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enshrine abortion in the state constitution<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/12\/democrat-majority-michigan-supreme-court-greenlights-democrat-plan-to-take-over-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">completely overhaul Michigan\u2019s election laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Michigan isn\u2019t the only place where national Republican groups seem to be abandoning the state\u2019s Republican gubernatorial candidate. In Pennsylvania, where Republican Doug Mastriano is going head-to-head with Democrat Josh Shapiro, RGA has yet to offer any significant support for Mastriano\u2019s campaign. Unlike Shapiro, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcall.com\/news\/pennsylvania\/mc-nws-shapiro-mastriano-campaign-finances-20220929-ehnodcsamfgvtn74cdglcabaay-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">received<\/a> roughly \u201c$5.1 million between early June and mid-September\u201d from the Democratic Governors Association, RGA is among the many big-name GOP organizations absent from Mastriano\u2019s list of financial backers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs previous reports showed, Mastriano\u2019s campaign is propped up by smaller donations,\u201d a report from The Morning Call reads. \u201cNearly $420,000 of the $3.1 million he raised in the past three months were from contributions of $250 or less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Without naming names, Mastriano <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/julianrouth\/status\/1575101581996875776?s=20&amp;t=qr9lAb34ZNODLdDFWvwcYw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly referenced<\/a> the lack of funding from national GOP groups during a recent Facebook Live video, saying that they have \u201cnot been forthcoming in supporting this campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPennsylvanians, if you\u2019re giving money to these national organizations, just know the money is not coming to Pennsylvania,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Mastriano\u2019s campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/doug-mastriano-to-launch-television-ad-campaign-in-pa-governor-e2-80-99s-race\/ar-AA12yxjE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> that it would be investing $1 million in a series of television and digital ads set to air throughout the final weeks of the election cycle. The purchase marks the first time throughout the general election that Mastriano\u2019s team has directed funds toward broadcast ads.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the lack of support from major Republican organizations, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrafalgargroup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/TRF-PA-General-0916-Poll-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent poll<\/a> from The Trafalgar Group has shown the race between Mastriano and Shapiro to be closer than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2022\/governor\/pa\/pennsylvania_governor_mastriano_vs_shapiro-7696.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most corporate press outlets<\/a> have indicated, with Shapiro holding a slight lead of roughly two points (47.7 to 45.9 percent).<\/p>\n<p>RGA did not respond to The Federalist\u2019s request for comment on why they aren\u2019t making greater investments in Michigan and Pennsylvania or if the group plans to commit more financial resources to either state ahead of Election Day.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Shawn Fleetwood is a Staff Writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
