Although the bathroom rape, first reported by The Daily Wire, animated Youngkin\u2019s race against Terry McAuliffe, the Republican sheriff said the curious timing of Barrett\u2019s arrest had nothing to do with the election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a coincidence,\u201d Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman told The Daily Wire. \u201cIt was actually a very detailed investigation, we had to go back several years from 2016 to 2013. We had to go do a lot of interviews.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The victim, a biological female, spent three years at Freedom High School before graduating in 2015, according to the plea agreement. Barrett was a guidance counselor, and was assigned to the victim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The victim was] transgender and was living as a male when he began at Freedom High School,\u201d the plea agreement said. \u201cHe began the physical and hormonal transition process while he attended Freedom High School.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the victim\u2019s sophomore year, Barrett invited the student to go to a playground with her child. Eventually, she invited the student to her house where they \u201ccuddled while watching television. This occurred two or three times, and then progressed to kissing, and then to digital penetration and oral sex,\u201d the plea deal said.<\/p>\n<p>The relationship continued throughout the victim\u2019s time at the school and included Barrett providing the student with passes to get out of class and visit her office. The victim returned to the school in May 2021 for a visit as an adult, and told a teacher what occurred \u201cto ensure that it would not happen to anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The teacher told police that the victim \u201chad spent an unusual amount of time with the accused, who would email \u2026 teachers to inform them he would not be in class.\u201d The report led to Barrett\u2019s being placed on leave, the quiet, six-month investigation, and the September 16 guilty plea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy client has accepted responsibility for this consensual relationship,\u201d Barrett\u2019s attorney, William \u201cBen\u201d Mann, told The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>The role of school counselors in the lives of gender-confused students has been in the spotlight in recent times. Earlier this week, The Daily Wire reported that a top <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/top-national-school-psychologist-part-of-group-offering-to-pay-rehome-gay-kids-to-new-parents\">National Association of School Psychologists<\/a> (NASP) official, who also works in Northern Virginia, participated in a transgender group that said it would send cash and transportation to children who wanted to leave their homes, and \u201cfind you someone who can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pro-trans-group-behind-virginia-school-walkout-plans-to-rehome-gay-kids-who-hate-their-parents\/\">provide you<\/a> a kind and affirming home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amy Cannava is chair of NASP\u2019s LGBTQI2-S Committee and has provided training to other psychologists on LGBT issues. On NASP\u2019s website, she suggested that school administrators should shield counselors who were in violation of a pending Virginia state policy saying that schools <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/virginia-replaces-democrats-mandatory-transgender-policy-with-parents-rights-manifesto\">should not hide<\/a> a student\u2019s gender transition from parents.<\/p>\n<p>Cannava described the draft policy, which permits schools to call transgender students by new names and pronouns, but only with permission from parents, \u201chorrific.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A group affiliated with Cannava, Safe Space NOVA, said it did not support the rehoming of students. But she has previously made comments relevant to the topic.<\/p>\n<p>On a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.listennotes.com\/podcasts\/out-what-now\/supporting-lgbtq-students-in-6nNH0uwBcyf\/\">podcast<\/a> called \u201cOut, What Now?\u201d Cannava said \u201cI recognize that parental consent is a big deal, but when I\u2019m doing anything LGBT, I don\u2019t worry about that. \u2026 Let\u2019s be honest, it\u2019s an electronic permission slip. You type in a parent\u2019s name and I\u2019m like \u2018oh that parent signed consent.\u2019 There\u2019s no actual signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to sometimes break rules to do good for kids,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Cannava, who said she is \u201cqueer\u201d and attracted to \u201ctrans-masculine non-binary folx,\u201d said \u201cI had a record day where five kids came out to me. I said \u2018this is amazing\u2019 \u2026 Most of the time it\u2019s like, \u2018I think I\u2019m trans,\u2019 which really means \u2018I am trans.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She has the backing of the association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen our ethical standards are in conflict with policy or law, our standards encourage school psychologists to advocate for change in such policies\/laws,\u201d a NASP spokesperson said. \u201cAdvocacy is not breaking the law. Amy is not in violation of either the law or our standards.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The student reported the crime in May 2021, the same month that a notorious bathroom rape of a girl by a boy wearing a skirt occurred. But the counselor was not arrested, and the investigation was not made public, until November 3, 2021 \u2013 the day after Election Day. Republican Gov.
