Leonnig.<\/p>\n<p>Wow. A \u201cone-car accident.\u201d That sounds really bad. Let\u2019s hear more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Secret Service agent driving Harris in an SUV struck the curb of a downtown tunnel hard enough that the vehicle\u2019s tire needed to be replaced,\u201d Leonnig said.<\/p>\n<p>So wait, a flat tire? Well, goodness, how badly was the vice president injured?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Vice President sustained no injuries and appreciates the quick response by her USSS detail to get her to the White House safely,\u201d Harris spokesman Kirsten Allen said in an emailed statement to the Post.<\/p>\n<p>What does the Secret Service say?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring a protective movement Monday, a vehicle in a motorcade had a minor overcorrection and struck a curb,\u201d Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the paper. \u201cThe protectee was transferred to a secondary vehicle, and the motorcade continued to its destination. There were no injuries to anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So why the \u201cmechanical failure\u201d reference? \u201cInitial radio traffic indicated this was a mechanical failure, and that was communicated to agency leadership by personnel supporting the motorcade movement,\u201d Guglielmi said, noting that Secret Service leaders were later briefed in conversation after Harris was delivered to the White House.<\/p>\n<p>One Secret Service official familiar with the incident took issue with the breathless Post story. \u201cWell, honestly, I wouldn\u2019t characterize this as anything close to a \u2018crash,&#8217;\u201d the official told The Daily Wire. \u201cAnd neither would anybody else in law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTiger Woods crashed. The driver hit a curb? Which probably did lead to some type of mechanical failure. S*** happens,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n<p>Some publications hyped the story. The Daily Beast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/vice-president-kamala-harris-was-in-minor-car-crash-while-in-secret-service-motorcade-report-says\">wrote<\/a> Harris had been in a \u201cone-vehicle car crash.\u201d\u00a0The Washington Examiner went further, posting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/kamala-harris-car-accident\">headline<\/a> that read: \u201cVEEP IMPACT: SUV carrying Harris crashes.\u201d But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/06\/politics\/kamala-harris-car-accident\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> struck the right tone, saying in its story: \u201c\u2026 Harris was involved in a minor car accident\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Secret Service official who spoke to The Daily Wire pointed out another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/secret-service-agents-investigated-for-late-night-car-accident-at-white-house\/2015\/03\/11\/9c853906-c7ff-11e4-a199-6cb5e63819d2_story.html\">story<\/a> written by Leonnig that he said was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Obama administration is investigating allegations that two senior Secret Service agents, including a top member of the president\u2019s protective detail, drove a government car into White House security barricades after drinking at a late-night party last week, an agency official said,\u201d she wrote on March 11, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe incident happened about 10:30 p.m. on the White House compound near 15th Street NW and Freedom Plaza, as D.C. police officers and Secret Service officers were trying to clear the scene because of an investigation of a suspicious package, according to the people familiar with the incident,\u201d the story said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWitnesses reported that the car\u2019s overhead flashing lights had been activated and both agents were showing their badges to get through the section of the grounds that had been closed off, according to people familiar with the incident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Way down in the story, the Post said: \u201cThe vehicle ran through security tape before hitting the barricades, which an agency official said had been set up temporarily during the investigation of the package.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the Secret Service official gave a different version. \u201cThe guy literally moved an orange construction barrel about 2 feet with the nose of his car,\u201d the agent said.<\/p>\n<p>Hmm.
