Carter and his girlfriend, who was not identified, were visiting the islands to celebrate his 40th birthday,\u00a0 The pair were leaving the beach on a hotel shuttle bus when he was shot.<\/p>\n<p>Botting \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/local\/arlington-virginia-man-kent-carter-killed-on-vacation-turks-and-caicos-naacp\/3174605\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told NBC4<\/a> that gang members shot \u201cindiscriminately,\u201d hitting the shuttle bus and sparking a shootout with police. In addition to Carter, a tour guide and a suspect were killed and five other people were injured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese criminals proceeded to indiscriminately shoot into the vehicle transporting the employees and tourists,\u201d Botting said. \u201cOur deepest condolences go out to the families of those murdered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No arrests had been made, but police recovered the suspects\u2019 car and several guns, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. State Department spokesman said officials are providing consular assistance to Carter\u2019s loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>NAACP Arlington Branch President Julius Spain told the outlet Carter shielded his girlfriend from the gunshots, potentially saving her life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWords alone aren\u2019t enough to say how much this hurts, how much we grieve right now,\u201d Spain said.<\/p>\n<p>Carter worked as a real estate agent in the Northern Virginia area. Robert York, a neighbor of Carter\u2019s, said the slain man will be greatly missed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe and his family, just really great neighbors.
