It was a fictional story about a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union over NATO. Over 100 million Americans watched it in 1983. It was later broadcast in Russia in 1987.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The movie <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/war-is-boring\/this-tv-movie-about-nuclear-war-depressed-ronald-reagan-fb4c25a50044\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>depressed<\/span><\/a><span> President Ronald Reagan and helped drive him to curtail nuclear proliferation. I remember being scared after watching it in the second grade and many adults buzzing about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After all, what\u2019s more terrifying\u2014and also more conversation-worthy\u2014than civilizational annihilation?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Since the 1950s and throughout the Cold War, the specter of nuclear war haunted American, European, and Russian psyches, as a real possibility that could literally mean the end of humankind. All over contemporary political squabbles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Today, it feels like we are closer to nuclear war with Russia than at any other time in my adult life. Over Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/putins-nuclear-threat-is-real-annexation-kremlin-west-imperialism-biden-ukraine-world-order-retreat-concessions-blackmail-11664824197\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>threatened<\/span><\/a><span> it. Prominent former U.S. officials casually discuss nuclear strikes as an \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YALiberty\/status\/1577303679287312385\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span>option<\/span><\/a><span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Retired general and former Pentagon official Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt tells CNN the U.S. should consider launching a NUCLEAR strike on Russia as an option. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DUVauKD9FU\" class=\"stylish-link\">pic.twitter.com\/DUVauKD9FU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Young Americans for Liberty (@YALiberty) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YALiberty\/status\/1577303679287312385?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\"stylish-link\">October 4, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>And nobody seems to give a crap!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the \u201880s we couldn\u2019t stop thinking about it. Worrying. Making TV movies about it. Presidents taking action over it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 2022, James Madison\u2019s flute and Herschel Walker take precedent instead, apparently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One of the few places I have found the appropriate level of alarm over this was Tucker Carlson\u2019s Fox News program on Monday night. On it, independent journalist Glenn Greenwald accurately laid out the reason for the establishment media\u2019s disinterest in this issue. Putin must be removed from office. Putin, of course, has no intention of leaving. You would have to take him out. Now, you don\u2019t have to like Vladimir Putin. You don\u2019t have to like anything about Vladimir Putin. You can hate Vladimir Putin and most Americans do, but you can still understand how totally deranged talk like this is. It\u2019s the definition of reckless.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cConsider their own descriptions,\u201d he continued. \u201cFor years, Democrats and the defense establishment they control have told us that Vladimir Putin is crazy and evil and he may be. Let\u2019s assume it\u2019s true. They\u2019ve said it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIs that the man you want to publicly threaten with extermination?\u201d Carlson asked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is the man who controls more than 6,000 nuclear warheads,\u201d he added. \u201cSo, if you push him hard enough, why wouldn\u2019t he use those nuclear weapons? Well, by their own description of him, he would.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">SpaceX\u2019s out of pocket cost to enable &#038; support Starlink in Ukraine is ~$80M so far. Our support for Russia is $0. Obviously, we are pro Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Trying to retake Crimea will cause massive death, probably fail &#038; risk nuclear war. It is a huge country in a highly fractious country with a large and very restive Muslim population. So, that\u2019s true. Just for one second, what are the chances that in the ensuing chaos, which we are forcing on Russia in that chaos, what are the chances that one of those 6,200 nuclear weapons might wind up in the hands of someone who is truly crazy and dangerous to us and to the world? Well, lots of Americans died and the country split apart. So, multiply that outcome times infinity and you understand what our leaders are proposing here and just how deranged they are and they should know better because they\u2019ve done this before, but they learned nothing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Carlson later added, \u201cThis is true lunacy. An entire country ignoring, led by its leaders, leaders who specialize in ignoring the things that matter, imminent catastrophe. That\u2019s not an overstatement. This is not the inflation rate ticking up two points or a loss of 15% of your 401k\u2026 this is a nuclear war.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He later emphasized, \u201cIf you live in a big metro area, <\/span><b>there\u2019s not anything you\u2019re going to do during a nuclear exchange because you\u2019re going to be dead along with most other Americans.<\/b><span> The overwhelming majority of Americans will be dead and those who survive will starve to death because all agriculture will be destroyed, along with billions of people around the planet.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo, it\u2019s time to update your assumptions about the technology here,\u201d Carlson warned. <\/span><b>\u201cThese are not the bombs that flattened Nagasaki. They are incalculably more powerful. You hit New York, you take out Miami.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This might sound like hyperbole. Fear-mongering over Saddam Hussein\u2019s imagined capability to use non-existent weapons of mass destruction caused so much needless havoc and death two decades ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But however you feel about Tucker Carlson, his Monday night rant was not that. It was a sincere\u2014and much-needed\u2014warning to his large audience that right now major world powers with actual weapons of mass destruction are casually threatening to use them to end the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And hardly anyone is talking about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Like this article?
