Among the other inaugural appointees are former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, a Democrat who will chair the committee, and Roosevelt Institute CEO Felicia Wong, who will serve as vice-chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA critical piece of executing on our racial equity goals is bringing a wide set of outside perspectives and lived experiences to the decision-making table,\u201d Yellen explained. \u201cThe Treasury Advisory Committee on Racial Equity, made up of members with wide-ranging backgrounds and expertise, will provide important insight and advice to leadership across the department to bolster and inform our equity efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nutter, who led the City of Brotherly Love from 2008 to 2016, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/philadelphia-politics-policing-pennsylvania-george-floyd-defund-20220527.html\">skeptical<\/a> of calls to defund the police and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/opinion\/commentary\/larry-krasner-michael-nutter-philadelphia-violence-20211207.html\">criticized<\/a> the \u201canti-police narrative\u201d forwarded by current Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. On the other hand, Wong co-authored a <a href=\"https:\/\/rooseveltinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/RI-RRT-Race-201606.pdf\">paper<\/a> contending that \u201cpolice budgets should be reduced and for-profit prison systems must be done away with\u201d four years before the death of George Floyd.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/rooseveltinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/RI_A-New-Paradigm-for-Justice-and-Democracy_Report_202111-1.pdf\">paper<\/a> co-authored by Wong last year said policymakers should \u201ccenter race\u201d in every decision. \u201cBecause our racial disparities are so severe across all elements of the American economy and society, no policy, even if facially race-neutral, is race-neutral in practice,\u201d the report explained. \u201cThe design of all policy proposals \u2014 big and small \u2014 must be attentive to racial outcomes. All policy, from vaccine distribution to higher education funding to tax reform, will have racialized effects. Recognizing this reality, and always considering race in policy design, is therefore vital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House is pursuing a \u201cwhole-of-government approach to put climate change at the center of our domestic, national security, and foreign policy,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/01\/27\/remarks-by-president-biden-before-signing-executive-actions-on-tackling-climate-change-creating-jobs-and-restoring-scientific-integrity\/#:~:text=It%27s%20a%20whole%2Dof%2Dgovernment,We%27re%20bold.\">speech<\/a> delivered by President Joe Biden days after his inauguration. While praising the administration\u2019s approach, Wong said that \u201ccentering race equity as a key measure of successful outcomes, which more generally challenges older racial liberal ideas prioritizing access and opportunity, will be pivotal to shifting policy norms and expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the Committee on Racial Equity, the Treasury Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/treasury-department-appoints-first-counselor-for-racial-equity\">hired<\/a> Janis Bowdler. She spearheaded JPMorgan Chase\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/one-year-after-george-floyd-americas-biggest-corporations-earmark-37-billion-for-racial-equity\">initiative<\/a> to invest $30 billion in underserved communities, as the first Counselor for Racial Equity at the end of last year. Yellen said in a statement that \u201cthe American economy has historically not worked fairly for communities of color\u201d and asserted that her department \u201cmust play a central role\u201d in removing purported racial inequality.<\/p>\n<p>The Treasury Department also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/key-treasury-dept-office-taps-new-climate-czar-to-push-wokeness-on-banks\">tapped<\/a> Yue Chen, a former official at the New York State Department of Financial Services, to serve as Chief Climate Risk Officer for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency \u2014 an entity charged with regulating national banks and federal savings associations. Policymakers at the Federal Reserve plan to work alongside Chen while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/behind-the-scenes-most-executives-actually-hate-woke-investing-survey\">forwarding environmental initiatives<\/a> within the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs our nation, and the world, grapple with how to respond to climate change, banks are increasingly focused on the risks that climate change brings to their balance sheets,\u201d Federal Reserve Board of Governors member Michael Barr remarked in a recent speech. \u201cThe Federal Reserve is working to understand how climate change may pose risks to individual banks and to the financial system.
