Sudeikis\u2019s project was the endearing series \u201cTed Lasso,\u201d which features him playing an optimistic, charming soccer coach. Wilde\u2019s was \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Darling,\u201d a heavy-handed feminist piece about a woman escaping a 1950s-style<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/28\/olivia-wildes-dont-worry-darling-is-a-mid-century-modern-themed-fever-dream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> male-power fantasy simulation<\/a>. In both cases, their art seems to be a form of therapy, but for Wilde, the drama of her life has overshadowed and undermined her artistic efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Gossip plagued \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Darling\u201d throughout its production. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/entertainment\/olivia-wilde-fired-shia-labeouf-dont-worry-darling-keep-florence-pugh-safe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shia LeBeouf was fired<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2022\/08\/26\/shia-labeouf-denies-being-fired-from-dont-worry-darling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">or was he?).<\/a> Wilde was <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/Culture\/olivia-wilde-publicly-served-custody-papers-cinemacon-vicious\/story?id=88797508\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">served custody papers<\/a> while on-stage promoting the movie. Wilde <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/music\/harry-styles-olivia-wilde-relationship-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">began dating<\/a> the leading actor she hired to replace LeBeouf: Harry Styles. Florence Pugh, the lead actress, was upset that trailers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinemablend.com\/movies\/all-the-dont-worry-darling-drama-olivia-wilde-and-florence-pughs-alleged-feud-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduced her role to sex scenes<\/a> with Styles. Did Styles spit on Chris Pine? Oddly, the drama around the movie became a meta-commentary on the themes of the movie itself: gender roles, masculinity, and power.<\/p>\n<p>Wilde called Jordan Peterson \u201ca pseudo-intellectual\u201d and \u201cincel hero,\u201d who inspired the film\u2019s villain. Both these claims have rightly been <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/thepost\/what-olivia-wilde-gets-wrong-about-jordan-peterson-and-incels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discredited<\/a>, but Wilde reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of Peterson\u2019s appeal by claiming he \u201clegitimizes\u201d incels. Peterson explicitly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v6pOUI8IPSQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warns against resentment<\/a> and complacency. Rather, his teaching to young men could be summarized in 4 words: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/HbZ6MH5H0oo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grow the hell up<\/a>! Peterson appeals to young men because he presents a positive vision for masculine aspiration, a preferable alternative to Wilde\u2019s world, where men are either oppressors or betas. Harry Styles manages to \u2500 between his work on camera and on the press circuit \u2500 be both.<\/p>\n<p>Wilde originally cast LeBeouf as the lead, but she claimed that he brought too much \u201ccombative energy\u201d (something Peterson might argue is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bC8-btpB8Sk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">positive masculine impulse<\/a> wrongly discouraged). To replace LeBeouf, she chose Styles, the epitome of the effeminate man. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamour.com\/story\/harry-styles-nail-polish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wears nail polish<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/fashion\/trends\/g30274211\/how-to-dress-like-harry-styles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flamboyant clothing<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/harry-styles-vogue-cover-may-be-historic-but-it-isnt-radical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">does ridiculous photo shoots<\/a>. His strength in the film, <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/movies\/olivia-wilde-praises-harry-styles-talent-in-movie-weeks-after-being-linked-blown-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to Wilde<\/a>, is his passivity, his willingness to allow \u201cthe brilliant Florence Pugh to hold center stage.\u201d On the press circuit, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/67haessFQ44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he appears lost, lurching between fillers and canned buzzwords<\/a>. Quotes below are literal with emphasis mine:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/67haessFQ44?t=67\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On the struggles of men today<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI think in society in general; I think, uh, you know, it\u2019s probably more obvious now and probably more talked about now, <em>still not as much as it should be<\/em>, but I think obviously, like, <em>mental health<\/em> around, uh, you know, for, for, I mean <em>for everyone<\/em>, but, you know, the kind of the <em>suicide rates and stuff in males is higher<\/em>, right?\u2026 I read, uh, <em>\u2018The Will To Change\u2019 <\/em>by Bell Hooks, which I thought was, like, the best kind of explanation of, like, the history of, um, kind of <em>toxic masculinity and male rage<\/em> and all of those things which I think reading that after doing the film there\u2019s, like, a lot of, you know, kind of things that kind of correlate for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/67haessFQ44?t=347\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On progress since the 1950s<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe themes of, um, the kind of, like, gender roles of the kind of time in which the film feels to be set and things are very kind of, uh, you know, it feels, like, very kind of <em>traditional<\/em>, uh, kind of <em>misogynistic<\/em> time. I think <em>it\u2019s incredibly relevant today<\/em>, um, obviously everything that\u2019s happening with kind of <em>women having their rights over their own bodies taken away<\/em> so it\u2019s kind of, uh, you know, it\u2019s a scary point to kind of realize how not, uh, kind of vintage that is, even if you\u2019re looking at all of these vintage cars and vintage clothes and vintage architecture and stuff a lot of the themes are <em>incredibly relevant now<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/67haessFQ44?t=416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On the movie\u2019s strengths<\/a>: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201c<em>My favorite thing about the movie<\/em> is, like, it feels like a, like a movie. It feels like a real, like, you know, go to the theater film movie that, you know, you you kind of, <em>the reason why you go to watch something on the big screen<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It may seem odd that Wilde, clearly a capable woman, would break up with the father of her children and partner of seven years and then choose to date a bimbo pop star 12 years her junior. While there\u2019s something surreal about watching a 38-year-old mother of two become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/olivia-wilde-rocks-harry-styles-171848093.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harry Styles groupie<\/a> wearing <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/articles\/olivia-wilde-feminist-tee-shop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ribald t-shirts<\/a>, there\u2019s a certain logic to her choice.<\/p>\n<p>Men can be oppressors as they are in her film. These 1950s-era men are sloppily categorized as complete villains to be opposed at all costs. And then, there are the real-life men of 2022 who she dates and directs, fops like Chris Pine and Harry Styles. These men are so emasculated that they are, at best, fun diversions and otherwise irrelevant. Wilde\u2019s advice to men seems to be: Shut the hell up. Judging from his interview, Styles is well-suited to such a calling.<\/p>\n<p>Wilde\u2019s ex, Jason Sudeikis, has created in \u201cTed Lasso\u201d therapeutic art of a different sort. Like Wilde, his work features a protagonist in an unhappy marriage. The titular Lasso is cheerful and kind, but we learn his marriage is crumbling. His wife tells him she doesn\u2019t love him anymore and wants a divorce. However, at this point, his piece diverges. In \u201cLasso,\u201d Ted is heartbroken but tells his wife that she shouldn\u2019t stay miserable for him.<\/p>\n<p>We watch as he suffers mightily, turning to alcohol and then therapy to try to work through the pain of his divorce and estrangement from his children. He doesn\u2019t conclude that the problem was the institution of marriage and stable families and that all women are evil. Instead, Sudeikis\u2019s show treats the serious topics of marriage and family and responsibility to the next generation with the respect and nuance that they deserve. Wilde\u2019s focus is on women\u2019s fulfillment alone.<\/p>\n<p>Ted Lasso is a cultural icon because he\u2019s a rare TV character (and modern man) who\u2019s wholesome and worthy of emulation. While his folksy Midwestern attitude is certainly not macho, he\u2019s no pushover either. He endures withering criticism and rudeness with kindness, humility, and grace. He is a father figure to his players, and he calls them to excellence on the pitch through a positive and encouraging vision, not abuse and belittlement. He calls them to something greater than merely beta or oppressor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t Worry Darling\u2019s\u201d failures are emblematic of the shortcomings of modern feminism: harsh criticism with no desirable alternative. Wilde\u2019s life and movie present liberation that is neither instructive nor worthy of imitation. <\/p>\n<p>Sudeikis has taken a different path. He\u2019s made art that aims for a smile rather than a scream, optimism over pessimism, building up rather than tearing down. Sudeikis has emerged from the crucible with something to offer.
