It\u2019s not helping, at least in the cases of Beto O\u2019Rourke and Stacey Abrams.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Rourke, who famously said \u201cI\u2019m just born to be in it\u201d right before he got crushed in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries, is going up against Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R). Meanwhile, Abrams \u2014 who famously refused to accept that she lost her gubernatorial bid in 2018, saying the election was \u201crigged\u201d and the outcome \u201cstolen\u201d \u2014 is in a rematch with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp (R).<\/p>\n<p>The most recent poll in Texas, taken by <a href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/images\/polling\/tx\/tx09282022_tung28.pdf\">Quinnipiac<\/a>, shows Abbott leading O\u2019Rourke 53-46. A running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2022\/governor\/tx\/texas-governor-abbott-vs-orourke-7376.html\">average<\/a> of all polls compiled by RealClearPolitics.com (RCP) gives Abbott an 8-point lead.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/official-polls\/fox-news-poll-georgia-races-see-split-decision-warnock-kemp-ahead\">Fox News<\/a> poll shows Kemp leading Abrams by 7 points, while the RCP average puts the lead at 6.6 points.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that they\u2019re both trailing \u2014 despite \u201cglossy magazine profiles\u201d and \u201csoft press coverage\u201d \u2014 surprised the liberal website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/politico-nightly\/2022\/09\/29\/two-dem-stars-struggle-to-recapture-the-magic-00059662\">Politico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cO\u2019Rourke hasn\u2019t led in a single survey since he announced his candidacy last November, and Abrams is barely doing better,\u201d Politico\u2019s deputy editor Calder McHugh wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir anointment as the future of the Democratic Party \u2014 young, dynamic and erudite \u2014 led to glossy magazine profiles and soft press coverage that may have burnished their national profiles but did little to advance their prospects among voters who weren\u2019t already inclined to support them,\u201d McHugh wrote.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Rourke, who announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2019 with a Vanity Fair cover shot taken by Annie Liebowitz, hasn\u2019t helped his own cause. In one early debate, O\u2019Rourke told the audience, \u201cHell yes, we\u2019re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That didn\u2019t go over very well in the pro-gun state and O\u2019Rourke dropped out of the race shortly after.<\/p>\n<p>Down in Georgia, Abrams has enjoyed friendly coverage as well. A gushing Vogue profile pondered whether she can \u201cSave American Democracy.\u201d And a piece by The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/magazine\/2020\/05\/14\/stacey-abrams-political-power\/\">featured<\/a> a shot of her wearing a superhero-style cape, noting that she \u201clost by fewer than 2 percentage points in the 2018 Georgia race riddled with allegations of voter suppression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor her part, Abrams was haunted by the conclusion of the 2018 governor\u2019s race, where she initially refused to concede, alleging voter suppression and that the result didn\u2019t accurately reflect the will of the people,\u201d McHugh wrote in Politico. \u201cShe\u2019s been explaining herself ever since, aiming to draw a distinction between her position and the accusations of election fraud made by former President Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the Post\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/09\/29\/stacey-abramss-rhetorical-twist-being-an-election-denier\/\">fact checker<\/a>, Glenn Kessler, said Abrams\u2019 repeated denial that she lost means \u201cshe\u2019s little different from former president Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She has sought to distance herself from her earlier claims, <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2022\/09\/stacey-abrams-trump-democracy-big-lie\/\">saying<\/a> last month, \u201cMy point was that the access to the election was flawed, and I refuse to concede a system that permits citizens to be denied access. That is very different than someone claiming fraudulent outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even that was wrong. A federal judge has ruled against an organization founded by Abrams, stating that the Georgia\u2019s election practices do not violate constitutional rights.<\/p>\n<p>After a four-year legal battle, U.S. District Court Judge Steve Jones <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/01\/politics\/georgia-voting-rights-ruling-abrams-kemp\/index.html\">said<\/a>: \u201cAlthough Georgia\u2019s election system is not perfect, the challenged practices violate neither the constitution nor the [Voting Rights Act] VRA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the end, it\u2019s clear that both Abrams and O\u2019Rourke are damaged goods and, despite the glowing coverage of swooning liberal press outlets, both appear headed for big defeats.<\/p>\n<p><em>The views expressed in this piece are the author\u2019s own and do not necessarily represent those of The Daily Wire.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Joseph Curl has covered politics for 35 years, including 12 years as White House correspondent for a national newspaper.
