(Photo by Spencer Platt\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>OAN Newsroom<br \/>UPDATED 11:50 AM PT \u2013 Monday October 3, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>California Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) has signed the Freedom to Walk Act, legalizing jaywalking statewide.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\">\n<\/div>\n<p>The new law will make it legal for pedestrians to cross the street anywhere, including outside of designated crosswalks, so long as it is safe to do so. Proponents of the law say that enforcing jaywalking laws waste police resources and discourage people from walking.<\/p>\n<p>Under the current law, individuals can receive a ticket for crossing the street outside of designated crosswalks. The new law will go into effect on January 1<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" data-placeholder-image=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/complianz-gdpr\/assets\/images\/placeholders\/twitter-minimal.jpg\" class=\"cmplz-placeholder-element twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Safe street crossings when the road is clear will soon be legal in CA. The Governor signed my jaywalking bill, which dictates that an officer can only issue a citation when the pedestrian causes a hazard. No more arbitrary enforcement. According to a release written by Ting, jaywalking disproportionately affects \u201cpeople of color and lower-income individuals who cannot afford tickets that can often total hundreds of dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cIt should not be a criminal offense to safely cross the street,\u201d Ting stated. \u201cWhen expensive tickets and unnecessary confrontations with police impact only certain communities, it\u2019s time to reconsider how we use our law enforcement resources and whether our jaywalking laws really do protect pedestrians,\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A pedestrian crosses the intersection of 3rd Avenue and 14th Street, one of Manhattan\u2019s most dangerous crosswalks for pedestrians, on October 27, 2014 in New York City.
