He even drove a few laps in a sprint car Tuesday at a test with Jimmie Johnson, but he did not associate concussion symptoms with the accident until late Wednesday, Hendrick Motorsports President Jeff Andrews said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nascar\/kurt-busch-driver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kurt Busch<\/a> is missing his 11th consecutive race because of a concussion suffered in a crash at Pocono. Both the Busch and Bowman accidents occurred with the rear of the car slapping the wall first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;You know there\u2019s a higher risk,&#8221; said driver and 23XI Racing co-owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nascar\/denny-hamlin-driver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denny Hamlin<\/a>, who will start on the front row Sunday. &#8220;The Talladega wreck here that Kurt took [in April] was a factor in him being permanently hurt, season-threatening or ending this year because of one of the tough hits he took here coming to the line in the spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;All these hits add up. They don\u2019t just go, \u2018OK, you survived this one. You\u2019re good to go for a next one.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"delta-video-container mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">\n<h3>Denny Hamlin: Next Gen car needs a redesign<\/h3>\n<div class=\"video-player-container\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/watch\/play-5f0b99435000e7b\" class=\"pointer video\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1024px)\" \/><source media=\"(max-width: 1023px)\" \/><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/play-5f0b99435000e7b-snap-1664665605412.jpeg\" alt=\"Denny Hamlin: Next Gen car needs a redesign\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" class=\"thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\n    Denny Hamlin believes NASCAR hasn&#8217;t listened to drivers who have expressed concern about the safety of the Next Gen car.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">Hamlin and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nascar\/kevin-harvick-driver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kevin Harvick<\/a> have been the most vocal drivers, and both attended a Friday meeting of the drivers council \u2014 open to all drivers \u2014 chaired by former driver Jeff Burton, who updated them on his conversations with NASCAR.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">Hamlin remains the most vocal, saying that the issues with the car are the result of &#8220;bad leadership&#8221; and that there needs to be new leadership \u2014 &#8220;start at the top and work your way down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;When me and Kevin are gone, someone has to step up and be the voice of reason and call things as they are,&#8221; Hamlin said. &#8220;I know all of these young guys are just happy to be here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;They ain\u2019t going to be happy to be here when their brains are scrambled for the rest of their lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">The younger drivers are starting to speak up, however. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nascar\/chase-elliott-driver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chase Elliott<\/a>, 26, delivered his strongest comments yet. NASCAR spent a few years developing the Next Gen car, delaying its rollout from 2021 to 2022 after the pandemic limited development in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;You have all of these years of experience, knowledge, time of racing, crashing these cars and teams working on them and building them \u2014 it just blows me away that we can have something new in 2022 that offers all of this technology and all of this time and experience of so many super talented people in this sport, and we allow it to go backward, especially with safety,&#8221; Elliott said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;It\u2019s just super-surprising to me that we allow that to happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"delta-video-container mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">\n<h3>Chase Elliott \u2018afraid the sport has gone backward\u2019<\/h3>\n<div class=\"video-player-container\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/watch\/play-5f0bc0866001269\" class=\"pointer video\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1024px)\" \/><source media=\"(max-width: 1023px)\" \/><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/play-5f0bc0866001269-snap-1664666959658.jpeg\" alt=\"Chase Elliott \u2018afraid the sport has gone backward\u2019\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" class=\"thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\n    Chase Elliott expressed concern for the safety of the Next Gen car but said he still has confidence that improvements will be made.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">Elliott is the sport\u2019s most popular active driver, so when he says something, it resonates with fans. He said he won\u2019t race any differently Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;As\u00a0far as the race goes, unfortunately or fortunately, however you want to look at it, you have to go and do your best to try and win and do all of the same things that you would do in the past to give yourself an opportunity to win the race,&#8221; Elliott said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;I don\u2019t really see that you have a ton of choices, other than just try to trust in the process that things are going to get better and hope we\u2019re taking steps in the right direction, and we\u2019re doing it in a timely manner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">Another veteran, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nascar\/brad-keselowski-driver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brad Keselowski<\/a>, said he expects drivers to avoid some of the gratuitous moves that could be considered risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;Whether they would admit it or not, there\u2019s no doubt you race differently when you are more afraid of getting hurt,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;We all have business decisions to make there. &#8230; For a while there, the racing was so aggressive because no one was afraid of getting hurt. Who knows? Maybe it will come back a little bit, which probably isn\u2019t a bad thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"delta-video-container mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">\n<h3>Brad Keselowski on racing at Talladega<\/h3>\n<div class=\"video-player-container\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/watch\/play-5f0bc002d000e7b\" class=\"pointer video\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1024px)\" \/><source media=\"(max-width: 1023px)\" \/><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/play-5f0bc002d000e7b-snap-1664666852623.jpeg\" alt=\"Brad Keselowski on racing at Talladega\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" class=\"thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\n    Brad Keselowski said he wouldn\u2019t expect a single-file race, but maybe some drivers might avoid the more gratuitous moves Sunday at Talladega.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">Harvick wasn\u2019t so sure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;You\u2019ve been here long enough. You know we\u2019re not just going to drive around,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The competitive nature is pretty high. You have to put all that aside, and you worry about the rest of it when you get done.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">Where does NASCAR go from here? The first step will be trying to regain the trust of veteran drivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">NASCAR did two crash tests with robotic controls of a Next Gen car at Talladega in October and December last year, and a spokesman said it was the most tested car when it came to computer modeling. The spokesman said NASCAR has had nearly twice as many crashes this year in Cup, and the crashes are recording higher in angle and speed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">NASCAR is testing a new rear clip and rear bumper construction in a crash test next week at a facility in Ohio. Any updates to the car wouldn\u2019t come until next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;The most important thing to not lose sight of is it\u2019s not just a rear clip,&#8221; Harvick said. &#8220;It\u2019s a front clip, a rear clip \u2014 a front and rear-end situation. It\u2019s not just the rear of the car.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">Andrews said NASCAR is looking at the front bumper construction as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">Hamlin said he was encouraged by the test, but more needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;It\u2019s the main goal right now for NASCAR to change the rear clip,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The car needs a full redesign \u2014 front, rear, everywhere. &#8230; We threw up red flags over a year ago, and they just didn\u2019t respond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;They just kept pushing that this race car had to be on the racetrack at all costs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">Harvick is skeptical of NASCAR\u2019s responses to drivers because, he said, drivers have complained about how hard the Next Gen wrecks for more than a year (some wrecked in testing), and there wasn\u2019t as much reaction as he would&#8217;ve liked to see.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;The trust level is obviously not where it needs to be from getting it fixed,&#8221; Harvick said. &#8220;They\u2019re going to have to earn the trust level back of reacting quick enough to do the things that it takes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;And the drivers\u2019 opinion, especially when it comes to the safety side of things, has to be more important than the data.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">There is a meeting planned between NASCAR and drivers next Saturday to go over where NASCAR is, as far as what the data is telling NASCAR and what NASCAR is doing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;The frustration lies in we have two guys out and one who can\u2019t walk \u2014 I don\u2019t know why it needs to be that way,&#8221; said Harvick, referring to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nascar\/cody-ware-driver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cody Ware<\/a>, who is racing this weekend with a broken right ankle. &#8220;Look at the data. [Ware\u2019s wreck] shouldn\u2019t have been that hard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;It wouldn\u2019t have been that high in the old car. The data is worse because the car is worse. We\u2019ve made it worse, and the hits are harder because the car hits harder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"delta-video-container mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">\n<h3>Joey Logano on the Next Gen crash test<\/h3>\n<div class=\"video-player-container\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/watch\/play-5f0bb4e8b001269\" class=\"pointer video\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1024px)\" \/><source media=\"(max-width: 1023px)\" \/><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/play-5f0bb4e8b001269-snap-1664666321851.jpeg\" alt=\"Joey Logano on the Next Gen crash test\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" class=\"thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\n    Joey Logano said crash testing next week is important to make sure any changes to the rear of the car do not compromise the fuel cell area.\n  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">The testing in Ohio is necessary to avoid unintended consequences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;You can\u2019t just say, \u2018Hey, soften it up,\u2019&#8221; former Cup champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/nascar\/joey-logano-driver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joey Logano<\/a> said. &#8220;Because there are other concerns that can come into play. You have a fuel cell back there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\">&#8220;You don\u2019t want that exploding. &#8230; We have to make sure we have some crumble zones, and they\u2019re in the right spots.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mg-t-b-20 ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt88 mg-t-b-20 article-content\" data-v-437a7e2e=\"\"><i>Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR for FOX Sports.
