Why? Because they tell us in\u00a0private <a href=\"https:\/\/empowerwisconsin.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/2022-09-28-Brandtjen-Milwaukee-Votes-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">text messages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/empowerwisconsin.org\/exclusive-dem-operative-led-city-officials-in-milwaukee-votes-2022-gotv-effort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Empower Wisconsin first reported<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday, communications obtained in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/empowerwisconsin.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/2022-09-28-Brandtjen-Milwaukee-Votes-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open records request<\/a>\u00a0to the city by state Rep. Janel Brandtjen (R-Menomonee Falls) show longtime Democratic Party operative\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationconsulting.com\/sachin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sachin Chheda<\/a>\u00a0telling Johnson and his staff what to say about the Wisconsin Votes 2022 get-out-the-vote campaign. The effort is being funded by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/center-for-secure-and-modern-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">left-wing activist group<\/a>\u00a0with close ties to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinspotlight.com\/the-election-mark-zuckerberg-bought\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Tech and Civic Life<\/a>\u00a0(CTCL), a leftist nonprofit funded by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While city officials, under the direction of Chheda, have said Milwaukee is not receiving any private funding for the effort, two things are clear: The mayor\u2019s office is taking orders from Democratic Party operatives, and the city of Milwaukee is coordinating with left-wing groups in what looks like an expensive effort to influence the outcome of November\u2019s election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we coordinating all vote events with your group? Based on the media frenzy yesterday, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s a good idea,\u201d Johnson\u2019s spokesman Jeff Fleming asks Chheda in a text sent earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I don\u2019t have information we can\u2019t coordinate,\u201d Chheda testily responds. \u201cI\u2019m not saying every event would be with us, but if you can let me know what\u2019s going on, then I can answer questions and plan. So yes, I do want to know everything related to voting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fleming\u2019s question followed the mayor\u2019s comments at a press conference that the city was assisting with the \u201cMilwaukee Votes 2022\u201d effort funded by private grants and that the city would soon be launching a widget on its website related to the get-out-the-vote (GOTV) campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cndimages.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/03073429\/fe6fv0kckNZCNpWD6rCCT5yfx0nz03aj1zRwrTeAkgH57sH15lQYiFv-SnGULZjSVoGaJSyxswE_pA7-Dvwi2wwKfoJ2Dyyd4zlmLqNS-e8inveZ-ZbwZn3HQniGPMD5pA_3tTOXaB-P7JAz7y3w99aTd-cBZl16NwmNXnarIp0PhoPH3bVFk8Qrzas2p3tHZ3eE3w\" alt=\"Text  Description automatically generated\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Why would the mayor\u2019s office and Milwaukee\u2019s top election official be working with Democratic operatives on a claimed \u201cnonpartisan\u201d GOTV campaign? That\u2019s the purview of political parties, not cities. It certainly isn\u2019t \u2014 and shouldn\u2019t be \u2014 the responsibility of a city\u2019s election administrators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the texts show Chheda setting up meetings at the Milwaukee Election Commission office to discuss the handling of Milwaukee Votes 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood morning! I\u2019m hoping the four of us can connect early this afternoon about Monday\u2019s event and looking ahead,\u201d the left-wing operative wrote in a text earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On this thread was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/melissa-baldauff-27808416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Melissa Baldauff<\/a>, Gov. Tony Evers\u2019 former communications director and principal with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gpsimpact.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GPS Impact<\/a>, a marketing outfit that boasts it has helped \u201cDemocrats, progressive organizations and initiatives, and elected officials win in red states.\u201d Baldauff and GPS Impact reportedly are or were involved in the GOTV initiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fleming and Claire Woodall-Vogg, executive director of the Milwaukee Election Commission, were also involved in the text chain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, Could we gather at City Hall at 1:30 to chat? I think 30 minutes would be enough,\u201d Chheda asks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine by me. Where at CH?\u201d Fleming responds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire\u2019s office? Claire if that works for you, we will come to your office?\u201d Chheda writes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Woodall-Vogg responds, \u201cGood for me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOK, just to confirm we are meeting at Claire\u2019s office, the election commission, at 1:30 PM today, 5th floor city hall. I\u2019m not sending a calendar invite, see you there,\u201d Chheda orders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgenda will include content of remarks for Monday, from various sources, as well as figuring out the plan on the advisory and pitching. We also want to make sure we\u2019re informing our stakeholders and partners. Claire can you please send me those materials we discussed, the list of groups that you\u2019re talking to, and anything from the Milwaukee Votes event from earlier this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><\/figure>\n<p>According to email communications, Woodall-Vogg previously had connected left-wing voting groups with Chheda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am happy to report that Sachin Chheda\u2019s nonprofit-nonpartisan organization is taking the lead for the mayor. I\u2019ve copied him in the hopes that you two can connect,\u201d the elections official wrote in an email to Peggy Creer, president of the League of Women Voters Milwaukee County, in mid-August. \u201cFrom my understanding, he is very much on track to still bring in resources for voter education and outreach to the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Late Wednesday, the Republican Party of Wisconsin (RPW) filed a lawsuit\u00a0in Milwaukee County Circuit Court challenging the city\u2019s \u201cMilwaukee Votes 2022\u201d initiative. RPW alleges government resources and personnel appear to be involved in assisting Democratic-aligned organizations, such as GPS Impact, in their GOTV efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The party says that records released give the appearance of coordination between Johnson\u2019s office and longtime Democratic Party operatives. If that coordination involves the use of government resources or personnel to drive Democratic Party voter turnout, that would be a violation of state statutes and the city of Milwaukee\u2019s own \u201cPolitical Activity Policy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>RPW Executive Director Mark Jefferson says the party is deeply concerned that cities like Milwaukee are working with Democrat operatives and partisan third-party groups to get out the vote \u201cin a manner designed to tip the scales for Democrats.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment\u2019s role in elections must be to ensure fairness and transparency, not to benefit one party at the expense of another, and we will aggressively fight to ensure that election laws are followed,\u201d Jefferson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chheda, in writing the press statement for the mayor\u2019s office, instructed Fleming to say: \u201cThere are nonprofit, nonpartisan groups who are canvassing door to door, funded entirely by civic-minded philanthropists, to encourage Milwaukeeans to vote. The city is neither funding nor receiving funds to canvass, and the mayor is voicing his support for the city\u2019s partnership with these nonprofit, nonpartisan groups who are mobilizing voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chheda then gets up on his left-wing activist soap box, offering an extended statement that never makes it to the press. It shows, once again, Milwaukee\u2019s election office being infiltrated by liberal activist groups:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The mayor is excited about all the work happening to encourage voting with the city and in partnership with outside groups. That includes the widget being installed on the city website which was developed by nonprofit partners and is available to any citizen who wants to check their voter registration statute or learn how to register, regardless of party. That includes the Early Voting sites funded by city taxpayers that allow all citizens to vote at more than a dozen locations across the city over the course of the 2-weeks early voting period. It includes the work discussed today to make it easier for disabled citizens to have their voice heard. And it includes the city\u2019s support of these nonprofit, nonpartisan groups who are canvassing door to door.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At one point, following a screed demanding he be kept in the loop about public statements, Chheda tells the mayor\u2019s office, \u201cOur funders do not want us to refer folks to Melissa [Baldauff] after all.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He then rips conservative talk show host Dan O\u2019Donnell, who had reached out to Baldauff for comment earlier this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not engage bad actors like Dan O\u2019Donnell He\u2019s not a journalist. He\u2019s a political activist,\u201d Chheda, the political activist, wrote. \u201cIf there are further enquires [sic], can we please discuss before any response is offered. I\u2019d appreciate it.
