Second, how many believe that when a law is decriminalized, the decriminalized action or activity increases in frequency?<\/p>\n<p>Finally, who thinks ticketing jaywalkers is <em>racist?\u00a0<\/em>Hang on \u2014 California Gov. Gavin Newsom (Leftist) just raised his hand. Moreover, Newsom, on Friday, signed a law decriminalizing jaywalking across the state.<\/p>\n<p>In Newsom\u2019s pandering mind, the familiar practice of police handing out tickets to pedestrians is enforced more often against minorities than other people. Hence, ticketing jaywalking is \u201cracist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/law-and-order\/2022\/10\/02\/california-decriminalizes-jaywalking-due-to-alleged-racial-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> by Breitbart, California\u2019s new,\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220AB2147\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">AB 2147<\/a>, known as the \u201cFreedom to Walk Act\u201d \u2014 you can\u2019t make this stuff up \u2014 takes into consideration the \u201ccultural differences\u201d between Californians who are deferential to laws governing pedestrian traffic and tend to obey \u201cdon\u2019t walk\u201d signals, and urban dwellers who are notoriously defiant when it comes to crossing against traffic signals.<\/p>\n<p>The bill\u2019s sponsor,\u00a0Assemblymember Phil Ting (D-San Francisco), celebrated the governor\u2019s action in a <a href=\"https:\/\/a19.asmdc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> on Friday:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It should not be a criminal offense to safely cross the street. When expensive tickets and unnecessary confrontations with police impact only certain communities, it\u2019s time to reconsider how we use our law enforcement resources and whether our jaywalking laws really do protect pedestrians. Plus, we should be encouraging people to get out of their cars and walk for health and environmental reasons.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Not to nitpick, Mr. Ting, but darting across busy streets, often causing drivers to slam on their breaks, is hardly \u201cwalking for health.\u201d And \u201cno comment\u201d on your \u201cenvironmental reasons\u201d nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>AB 2147 was Ting\u2019s second attempt to decriminalize jaywalking in California.<\/p>\n<p>The statement continued about the \u201cfairness\u201d of the way fines were assessed, and the prevention of potentially escalating police stops:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Jaywalking is arbitrarily enforced throughout California, with tickets disproportionately given to people of color and lower-income individuals who cannot afford tickets that can often total hundreds of dollars. When the law goes into effect on January 1, 2023, fewer working families will struggle to pay the costly citation, and police would not be able to use jaywalking as a pretext to detain someone.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As Breitbart noted, the new law prevents law enforcement officers from stopping pedestrians for jaywalking, except when it\u2019s obvious the person crossing the street is in \u201cimmediate danger of collision with a moving vehicle or other device moving exclusively by human power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Final show of hands: Who among us thinks the new law will be exploited, including to the extent of crying \u201cRacism!\u201d \u2014 even when the described \u201cimmediate danger of a collision\u201d is clear to multiple witnesses?<\/p>\n<p>The question was rhetorical.<\/p>\n<p>In other recent Gavin Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/redstate.com\/mike_miller\/2022\/09\/30\/gavin-newsom-signs-controversial-bill-designating-california-first-sanctuary-state-for-trans-children-n635488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>, the controversial governor on Thursday signed a law designating California as the first \u201csanctuary state\u201d in the nation for \u201cgender-dysphoric\u201d children and teens seeking so-called \u201cgender-affirming care.\u201d Newsom declared:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In California, we believe in equality and acceptance. We believe that no one should be prosecuted or persecuted for getting the care they need \u2014 including gender-affirming care. Parents know what\u2019s best for their kids, and they should be able to make decisions around the health of their children without fear.
