And, based on the initial reception, mainstream audiences aren\u2019t eager to see a rom-com aimed directly at the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBros,\u201d a smart, sophisticated love story starring Billy Eichner, bombed at the box office. The film will earn <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/10\/box-office-smile-dont-worry-darling-harry-styles-1235131625\/#comments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roughly $4.75 million on more than 3,000 screens<\/a>\u00a0for its opening weekend, according to the far-Left Deadline.com.<\/p>\n<p>That puts the film in fourth place behind \u201cSmile,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/dont-worry-darling-review-pugh-styles\/\">Don\u2019t Worry Darling<\/a>\u201d and \u201cThe Women King\u201d \u2013 the latter two in their second and third weeks of release, respectively. \u201cBros\u201d under-performed in the black community (just 6 percent of the total audience) and in the heartland, according to Deadline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBros\u201d boasted plenty of advantages over most rom-coms.<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s director, Nicholas Stoller, is well-versed in comedic work (\u201cForgetting Sarah Marshall,\u201d \u201cNeighbors\u201d). Co-producer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/judd-apatow-pc-police\/\">Judd Apatow<\/a> previously delivered hits like \u201cKnocked Up,\u201d \u201cThe Big Sick\u201d and \u201cTrainwreck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eichner, who stars in the film and co-wrote the script, lassoed some of Hollywood\u2019s biggest names to help promote the film, including Jack Black and Paul Rudd.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Billy Eichner has returned to the streets, this time with actor Jack Black, to promote his upcoming romantic comedy \u201cBros,\u201d out in theaters Sept. 30. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3CxxLC9nEa\">https:\/\/t.co\/3CxxLC9nEa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 TheWrap (@TheWrap) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheWrap\/status\/1574495769180225553?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 26, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Plus, \u201cBros\u201d is smart, sophisticated and brimming with rom-com essentials \u2013 colorful supporting players, a strong resolution and credible second act conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>The media gave the film plenty of attention, routinely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/movies\/2022\/09\/28\/bros-movie-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mentioning its historic nature.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It still delivered horrible numbers for a mainstream release.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s content may be partly to blame. Most rom-coms don\u2019t deliver hardcore sex scenes, something \u201cBros\u201d does repeatedly. Eichner\u2019s social media presence is combative, to say the least. The film takes shots at Presidents Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump, and gives a brief shout out to progressive darling Stacey Abrams.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also possible audiences are wary of the culture wars and didn\u2019t want their weekend escapism to remind them of our tribal times.<\/p>\n<p>The film features scenes sure to alarm those who decry \u201cgrooming\u201d tactics at the grade school level.<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood, for all its progressive virtue signaling, can be unabashedly conservative when it comes to risk mitigation.
