Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), incensed by the decision, said <a href=\"https:\/\/spanberger.house.gov\/posts\/spanberger-statement-on-house-leaderships-refusal-to-ban-members-of-congress-from-trading-individual-stocks\">in a Sept. 30 statement<\/a> that it was \u201ca failure of House leadership\u201d and called for a new generation of Democrats to take control of the party.<\/p>\n<p>The text of the legislation (<a href=\"https:\/\/cha.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.cha.house.gov\/files\/documents\/EIGA-Reform_Bill%20Text%202022%2009%2027.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pdf<\/a>), dubbed the Combatting Financial Conflicts of Interest in Government Act, would seek to ban a range of officials\u2014in Congress, the executive branch, the Supreme Court, and at the Federal Reserve\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/democrats-release-bill-to-ban-stock-trading-by-members-of-congress-scotus_4760215.html\">from trading or owning investments<\/a> in instruments including stocks, commodities, futures, and cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>The draft legislation would force individuals covered by the measure to divest themselves of these holdings or put them in a qualified blind trust.<\/p>\n<p>Spanberger\u2019s letter comes after Hoyer on Sept. 30 announced that the bill would not come up for a vote this week.<\/p>\n<p>Asked to explain the decision to not follow through on the expected vote, Hoyer told reporters, \u201cPeople have to look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an important issue,\u201d he added, saying Democrats need more time \u201cto make sure that if and when we do something, we do it right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Spanberger\u2019s Statement <\/p>\n<p>Spanberger, a leader of the bipartisan effort to block stock trading by members of Congress, shot back in a stinging statement against her party\u2019s current leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur job as elected officials is to serve the people\u2014not ourselves,\u201d Spanberger wrote. \u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019ve been proud to lead the charge on legislation to ban Members of Congress and their immediate families from trading individual stocks\u2014not only because it\u2019s the right thing to do, but because the Virginians I represent overwhelmingly support it and want us to get it done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the early days of<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A House Democrat is up in arms against party leadership in the lower chamber after Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) blocked legislation that would ban stock trading by members of Congress.
