With winds exceeding 150 miles per hour, the storm was tied for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/how-does-hurricane-ian-stack-up-against-floridas-most-devastating-storms\">fourth-strongest hurricane<\/a> to ever hit the Sunshine State.<\/p>\n<p>With wind speeds falling to 65 miles per hour, Ian entered the Atlantic Ocean and turned back toward the continental United States on Friday, regaining hurricane status as wind speeds rose to 85 miles per hour, indicating a Category 1 storm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIan is forecast to turn toward the north-northwest by tonight and will move inland across eastern South Carolina and central North Carolina tonight and Saturday,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/text\/refresh\/MIATCPAT4+shtml\/301759.shtml\">statement<\/a> from the National Hurricane Center, which added that the storm will \u201cweaken rapidly after landfall\u201d and dissipate over western North Carolina or Virginia by Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the agency warned residents of coastal South Carolina that storm surges could reach heights of 7 feet in some areas if peak surges occur during high tide. Some portions of western Florida <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/we-were-incredibly-hard-hit-stunning-video-shows-submerged-houses-blown-out-bridges-following-hurricane-ian\">experienced surges<\/a> as high as 18 feet, causing difficulties for officials attempting rescue efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe deepest water will occur along the immediate coast near and to the right of the center, where the surge will be accompanied by large waves,\u201d the National Hurricane Center explained. \u201cSurge-related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge and the tidal cycle, and can vary greatly over short distances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Governor Henry McMaster (R-SC) announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.sc.gov\/news\/2022-09\/team-south-carolina-responds-hurricane-ian-landfall\">press release<\/a> that state agencies are prepared to deal with the consequences of the storm. \u201cA lot of prayers have been answered \u2014 this storm is not as bad as it could have been, but don\u2019t let your guard down yet,\u201d he noted. \u201cWe are not out of the woods yet, there is water on the roads, still heavy winds, and it is still dangerous in many parts of the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McMaster advised residents in low-lying areas near the coast to move toward higher ground, stay in a well-constructed building away from windows and doors, and remain alert for tornadoes. At least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/2-tornadoes-confirmed-in-south-florida-as-hurricane-ian-strikes\">two tornadoes<\/a> struck Florida on Wednesday, inducing widespread damage.<\/p>\n<p>The National Hurricane Center announced on Thursday that Hurricane Ian would adopt an \u201catypical structure when it nears the southeastern United States.\u201d Officials cautioned that the system would take a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/we-now-expect-ian-to-become-a-hurricane-again-storm-is-stubbornly-veering-off-course-and-speeding-up-agency-warns\">different trajectory<\/a> than initially anticipated and become \u201ca hurricane again\u201d after gaining speed over the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIan has stubbornly gone east of the track forecast for the past couple of days and has moved back over water faster than expected,\u201d the agency said. \u201cA mid-level shortwave rough moving southward across the southern United States should turn Ian northward overnight and north-northwestward on Saturday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Large portions of Florida over which the storm has passed \u2014 including Charlotte County and Lee County \u2014 are still experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/millions-left-without-power-as-hurricane-ian-devastates-florida\">power outage rates<\/a> above 80%. Most outages are <a href=\"https:\/\/poweroutage.us\/area\/state\/florida\">concentrated<\/a> in central Florida, with few outages in the western and southern portions of the state.
