At the beginning of the exercise, the Board will publish details of the climate, economic, and financial variables that make up the climate scenario narratives,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/pressreleases\/other20220929a.htm\">statement<\/a> from the Federal Reserve explained. \u201cOver the course of the pilot, participating firms will analyze the impact of the scenarios on specific portfolios and business strategies. The Board will then review firm analysis and engage with those firms to build capacity to manage climate-related financial risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other nations\u2019 central banks, including the Bank of England, have formerly conducted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofengland.co.uk\/stress-testing\/2022\/results-of-the-2021-climate-biennial-exploratory-scenario\">similar exercises<\/a> meant to help executives navigate a transition to an economy with net zero emissions. The Federal Reserve already runs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/federal-reserve-stress-test-shows-big-banks-will-be-fine-through-the-next-recession\">stress tests<\/a> that determine whether the financial sector is able to weather economic crises.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Board\u2019s stress tests are designed to assess whether large banks have enough capital to continue lending to households and businesses during a severe recession,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cThe climate scenario analysis exercise, on the other hand, is exploratory in nature and does not have capital consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The executive branch, from which the Federal Reserve is separate, is pursuing a \u201cwhole-of-government approach to put climate change at the center of our domestic, national security, and foreign policy,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/01\/27\/remarks-by-president-biden-before-signing-executive-actions-on-tackling-climate-change-creating-jobs-and-restoring-scientific-integrity\/#:~:text=It%27s%20a%20whole%2Dof%2Dgovernment,We%27re%20bold.\">speech<\/a> delivered by President Joe Biden days after his inauguration. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, an entity in the Treasury Department charged with regulating and supervising banks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ots.treas.gov\/news-issuances\/news-releases\/2022\/nr-occ-2022-110.html\">recently tapped<\/a> New York State Department of Financial Services climate czar Yue Chen as its new chief climate risk officer.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/speech\/barr20220907a.htm\">speech<\/a> at the Brookings Institution, Federal Reserve Board of Governors member and Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr noted that monetary policymakers will begin working with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to \u201cprovide guidance to large banks on how we expect them to identify, measure, monitor, and manage the financial risks of climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs our nation, and the world, grapple with how to respond to climate change, banks are increasingly focused on the risks that climate change brings to their balance sheets,\u201d Barr remarked. \u201cThe Federal Reserve is working to understand how climate change may pose risks to individual banks and to the financial system. The Federal Reserve\u2019s mandate in this area is important, but narrow, focused on our supervisory responsibilities and our role in promoting a safe and stable financial system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pivot toward weighing climate change in fiscal and monetary policy has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/key-treasury-dept-office-taps-new-climate-czar-to-push-wokeness-on-banks\">drawn criticism<\/a> for further embedding the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) movement into corporate America.
