Mark Kelly, a Democrat, is hoping to fend off his challenger, Republican political newcomer Blake Masters. The two could not be more politically opposed.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly bills himself as a Senator willing to work across the aisle, but according to <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/biden-congress-votes\/mark-kelly\/\">FiveThirtyEight<\/a>, he has a voting record that suggests he\u2019s fairly progressive.<\/p>\n<p>Masters, on the other hand, secured Donald Trump\u2019s endorsement in the primary and hasn\u2019t been shy about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blakemasters.com\/about\">his view<\/a> that \u201cthe Swamp\u201d is a threat to the United States.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/mark-kelly-arizona-1200x800-1.jpg\"><\/a> Democratic Senator Mark Kelly speaks to supporters during the Election Night event at Hotel Congress in Tucson, Arizona, on Nov. 3, 2020. (Courtney Pedroza\/Getty Images) <\/p>\n<p>In September, an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emersoncollegepolling.com\/arizona-2022-mark-kelly-faces-tight-race-with-blake-masters-katie-hobbs-and-kari-lake-in-dead-heat-for-governorship\/\">Emerson College<\/a>\u00a0poll showed Kelly and Masters essentially neck and neck; Kelly received 47 percent, and Masters received 45 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The polling numbers resemble\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emersoncollegepolling.com\/arizona-2020-toss-ups-in-presidential-and-senate-races\/\">Arizona\u2019s 2020<\/a>\u00a0Senate race, where incumbent Martha McSally, a strong Trump supporter, lost to then-challenger Kelly. The loss was the second time McSally lost to a Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>The first loss happened in 2018 when Democrat Kyrsten Sinema successfully flipped retiring Republican Jeff Flake\u2019s seat from red to blue. It was also the first time Arizona elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1988.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the question comes down to, as Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2022-election\/mcconnell-says-republicans-may-not-win-senate-control-citing-candidate-rcna43777\">alluded<\/a>\u00a0to at a Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce luncheon, can a strong Trump supporter with a matching personality and campaign win in an increasingly \u201cpurple\u201d state? Or will \u201ccandidate quality\u201d again hamper Republicans in Arizona?<\/p>\n<p> History Repeats <\/p>\n<p>In 2018, McSally lost to Sinema in what, at the time, was considered a significant upset.
