Rhome\u2019s warning comes after more than 2 million businesses and homes in the state were left without power after the hurricane made landfall on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a colorless, odorless gas so you\u2019re not going to get a warning. You\u2019re not going to get a smell,\u201d Rhome said. \u201cSo please be very careful if you\u2019ve never run a generator before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis noted that even though there\u2019s an \u201capparent calm\u201d after the hurricane passes, people needed to careful because \u201cthere are still plenty of hazards out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter #HurricaneIan passes, be careful going outside,\u201d he tweeted. \u201cMake sure to avoid downed power lines, avoid standing water, stay clear of trees, do not drive in standing water and keep generators 20 feet outside of your home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HurricaneIan?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HurricaneIan<\/a> passes, be careful going outside. Make sure to avoid downed power lines, avoid standing water, stay clear of trees, do not drive in standing water and keep generators 20 feet outside of your home.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1575293094718832642?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 29, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2022\/09\/29\/hurricane-generators-carbon-monoxide-outages\/\">noted<\/a> that in some recent hurricanes, roughly the same number of people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning after using a generator improperly as were killed by the hurricane itself.<\/p>\n<p>The report noted that generators can produce enough carbon monoxide to kill people within a matter of just a few minutes and that the most common mistake that people make is keeping the generators indoors for fear that they might be stolen. The report said that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has warned that a single generator \u201ccan produce the same amount of carbon monoxide as hundreds of cars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Hoehn-Saric, chair of the CPSC, said that people often times overlook the dangers of leaving a generator indoors because they are focused on \u201crebuilding their lives\u201d after seeing all the destruction around them.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said that people should not even use generators inside open garages or in areas with lots of open windows and doors because the volume of carbon monoxide that the generator can produce far outweighs the amount of oxygen that can fill the void.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople don\u2019t use generators all too often.
