{"id":1664875,"date":"2022-09-29T14:56:29","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T18:56:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=1664875"},"modified":"2022-09-29T14:56:41","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T18:56:41","slug":"eu-wants-new-transaction-based-lng-benchmark-in-bid-to-calm-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/eu-wants-new-transaction-based-lng-benchmark-in-bid-to-calm-prices\/","title":{"rendered":"EU wants new transaction based LNG benchmark in bid to calm prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\"><div class=\"mashsb-box\"><div class=\"mashsb-count mash-medium\" style=\"&quot;\"><div class=\"counts mashsbcount\">24<\/div><span class=\"mashsb-sharetext\">SHARES<\/span><\/div><div class=\"mashsb-buttons\"><a class=\"mashicon-facebook mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.conservativenewsdaily.net%2Fbreaking-news%2Feu-wants-new-transaction-based-lng-benchmark-in-bid-to-calm-prices%2F\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-twitter mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=&amp;url=https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=1664875&amp;via=ConservNewsDly\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-subscribe mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"#\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Subscribe<\/span><\/a><div class=\"onoffswitch2 mash-medium mashsb-noshadow\" style=\"display:none\"><\/div><\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                <div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div><\/aside>\n            <!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 4.0.47--><p>By Bozorgmehr Sharafedin, Kate Abnett and Marwa Rashad<\/p>\n<p>LONDON (Reuters) \u2013     The European Union wants a new transaction-based benchmark for liquefied natural gas (LNG) as it says the fall in Russian pipeline gas flows and record high LNG imports have created imbalances in the current pricing mechanism.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\">\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 27 EU member countries are negotiating proposals made last week to control soaring energy prices and rein in costs for consumers but Brussels is already exploring additional measures.<\/p>\n<p>In a paper shared with member states on Wednesday night and published on Thursday, the EU Commission said an alternative LNG price benchmark \u2013 which market participants could use voluntarily \u2013 should be based on verifiable price assessments for LNG cargo deliveries, to ensure it reflected real-world prices for the fuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe complementary benchmark would limit the current negative effect on price formation due to [pipeline] infrastructure bottlenecks and is thus expected to bring prices closer to the world market level,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Buyers of LNG usually price off benchmarks such as the\u00a0Henry Hub for natural gas prices in the United States or the Japan Korea Marker (JKM) in Asia, with a small spread added to account for the costs of regasification and transferring the gas to the grid. <\/p>\n<p>In Europe, the standard benchmarks are the\u00a0Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF), used for both pipeline gas and LNG, and the UK\u2019s national balancing point (NBP).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 However, the TTF price has been buffeted by geopolitics and sentiment as much as supply and demand factors and some industry sources argue it can no longer define the real value of LNG in Europe, particularly with the rise of imports into the region this year. <\/p>\n<p>RISE OF LNG IMPORTS<\/p>\n<p>LNG imports into Europe have reached a record high this year as governments scramble to find alternatives to Russian gas, which if phased out completely would require 200 million tonnes of LNG to be shipped in over the next decade, analysts estimate. <\/p>\n<p>While the price of LNG is generally higher than natural gas, infrastructure limitations in pipeline networks and varying capacity to receive and process the chilled fuel has seen the relationship flip in some European hubs, causing major price divergences. <\/p>\n<p>Prices in France, for example, are lower than in other hubs like Germany which currently has no LNG terminals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNOT A MATTER OF DAYS\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An EU official said the Commission has already initiated work on a new benchmark with the Agency for Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER). <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s not a matter of days.
