{"id":1664502,"date":"2022-09-29T12:08:10","date_gmt":"2022-09-29T16:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=1664502"},"modified":"2022-09-29T12:08:23","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T16:08:23","slug":"this-month-in-fact-checking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-month-in-fact-checking\/","title":{"rendered":"This Month in Fact Checking"},"content":{"rendered":"<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\"><div class=\"mashsb-box\"><div class=\"mashsb-count mash-medium\" style=\"float:left\"><div class=\"counts mashsbcount\">10<\/div><span class=\"mashsb-sharetext\">SHARES<\/span><\/div><div class=\"mashsb-buttons\"><a class=\"mashicon-facebook mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.conservativenewsdaily.net%2Fbreaking-news%2Fthis-month-in-fact-checking%2F\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-twitter mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=&amp;url=https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=1664502&amp;via=ConservNewsDly\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-subscribe mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"#\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Subscribe<\/span><\/a><div class=\"onoffswitch2 mash-medium mashsb-noshadow\" style=\"display:none\"><\/div><\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                <div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div><\/aside>\n            <!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 4.0.47--><div><\/div>\n<p>The fact checkers&#8217; war on reality has continued unabated this month.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s just a few things they managed to spin.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Great Martha&#8217;s Vineyard Invasion\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In response to Governor Ron DeSantis sending illegal aliens (who are technically classified as asylum seekers) to Martha\u2019s Vineyard, and the hilariously hypocritical response that followed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/sep\/21\/instagram-posts\/claim-marthas-vineyard-deported-migrants-wrong\/\">PolitiFact\u2019s Madison Czopek<\/a> attempted to provide some damage control for the understandably embarrassed residents of the island.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response to a social media post mocking the island\u2019s virtue signaling residents for \u201cdeporting 50 illegals after only 24 hours,\u201d Czopek rated the claim false on the basis that the illegals couldn\u2019t be \u201cdeported\u201d because the word \u201cdeported\u201d means removal from the country as a whole, not from a particular area.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, anyone using the term \u201cdeported\u201d in this context is well aware of this, and it using it as a synonym for &#8220;removed.&#8221; You can bet that just about every Republican mocking Martha&#8217;s Vineyard for &#8220;deporting&#8221; these illegals is also outraged that they are in fact just being relocated, not actually deported from the country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Czopek is grasping at straws here, she at least didn&#8217;t embarrass herself by trying to argue that this wasn&#8217;t true because the illegals were actually deported after nearly 48 hours, not &#8220;just&#8221; 24.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, also at PolitiFact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/sep\/27\/peggy-hubbard\/least-three-marthas-vineyard-towns-adopted-sanctua\/\">Gabrielle Settles<\/a> rated it only \u201chalf true\u201d that Martha\u2019s Vineyard &#8220;was a sanctuary city until the buses arrived&#8221; with dubious reasoning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Like Czopek, Settles begins with semantics by telling us what we already know, that Martha\u2019s Vineyard is an island and not itself a city. This basically amounts to complaining that people aren\u2019t being more specific and calling it a \u201csanctuary island,\u201d even though the policies of that \u201csanctuary\u201d would be identical.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Making a point of slightly more substance, Settles points out that of the six towns on the island, only three did vote to adopt sanctuary policies (which was in 2017). This would be relevant if the illegals arrived on one of the three towns that didn\u2019t adopt sanctuary (island) policies, but they stayed in Edgartown, which was one of the three to vote to become a sanctuary (though apparently not for longer than 48 hours).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spending Cuts and Hypothetical Spending Cuts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Joe Biden twisted a statement from Senator Ron Johnson on mandatory vs. discretionary spending to make it look like he supports cutting Social Security and Medicare, despite never explicitly falling for cutting the programs, and PolitiFact rated Biden&#8217;s spin &#8220;mostly true.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PolitiFact\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/sep\/26\/joe-biden\/biden-mostly-track-ron-johnson-wants-annual-approv\/\">Madeline Heim <\/a>rated \u201cmostly true\u201d Biden&#8217;s statement that Johnson \u201cwants to put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block every single year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Heim notes that Johnson said in a radio interview last August that he believes all federal spending should be discretionary and reviewed by Congress every year. The federal government will spend just over $6 trillion this year and\u00a0most of it is in the category of \u201cmandatory spending,\u201d while only about $1.7 trillion<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebalancemoney.com\/u-s-federal-budget-breakdown-3305789#:~:text=The%20government%20expects%20to%20spend,It%20will%20be%20%241.688%20trillion.\"> (28%) is discretionary spending<\/a>, and can be modified.<\/p>\n<p>During the\u00a0radio interview, Johnson explained that he believed converting all spending into discretionary spending would allow fiscally challenged programs to be fixed. &#8220;If you qualify for the entitlement you just get it, no matter what the cost. And our problem in this country is that more than 70% of our federal budget, of our federal spending, is all mandatory spending. It\u2019s on automatic pilot. It never \u2026 you just don\u2019t do proper oversight. You don\u2019t get in there and fix the programs going bankrupt,&#8221; he told host Joe Giganti.<\/p>\n<p>Heim acknowledges that Johnosn never called for cutting social security and medicare, but said that because making them eligible for being cut as a consequence of being converted into discretionary spending, that the claim is thus \u201cmostly true.\u201d A hypothetical consequence of a policy is thus treated as its intended goal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Florida&#8217;s Faux-Whistleblower Finally Gets a Mention&#8230;. but Not for Her Lies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rebekah Jones made a name for herself in the early days of the COVID-era, and was single-handedly responsible for popularizing conspiracy theories about Florida covering up COVID deaths. She\u2019s now running for Congress in Florida, and is projected to lose massively to incumbent Matt Gaetz.<\/p>\n<p>Jones (falsely) claimed to have been fired from her position at the Florida Department of Health for refusing to manipulate data to support the state reopening, and after that was heralded as a \u201cwhistleblower\u201d in the media, making appearances on CNN, MSNBC, and countless local Florida news outlets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The results of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2022\/05\/28\/report-rejects-rebekah-jones-claim-that-florida-doctored-covid-data\/\">Inspector General<\/a> investigation that concluded earlier this year found no evidence of wrongdoing in response to the allegations from Jones, which were described as\u00a0 \u201cunsubstantiated\u201d and \u201cunfounded.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Oddly, the fact checkers seemed to entirely have missed the complete implosion of a media narrative that generated substantial attention, and is still widely believed by many gullible liberals today.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/sep\/19\/matt-gaetz\/gaetz-draws-misleading-comparison-jones-campaign-e\/\">PolitiFact <\/a>finally did mention Jones in an article this month &#8211; but it was to debunk a photo Rep. Gaetz shared of a nearly empty table that he mockingly said was a Jones campaign event.
