If you haven\u2019t seen a trailer, you\u2019ve at least heard of the drama. <\/p>\n<p>First, director Olivia Wilde and Shia LaBeouf <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/every-blessing-to-her-and-her-film-shia-labeouf-reacts-after-olivia-wilde-doubles-downs-on-claims-against-actor\">sparred<\/a> over whether the actor quit the production or was fired. Then there were reports that Wilde and the film\u2019s leading lady, Florence Pugh, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/a-complete-fabrication-chris-pine-swears-harry-styles-did-not-spit-on-him\">didn\u2019t get along<\/a> on set. There is also Wilde\u2019s relationship and possible affair with star Harry Styles, of which Pugh <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2022\/07\/30\/florence-pugh-upset-over-olivia-wilde-harry-styles-affair\/\">reportedly<\/a> didn\u2019t approve.<\/p>\n<p>And, finally, at the Venice Film Festival where the film premiered, there was #SpitGate. Did Harry Styles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-did-harry-styles-actually-spit-on-chris-pine-at-venice-film-festival\">spit on<\/a> Chris Pine? Reps for Pine vehemently denied the internet\u2019s speculation, but Styles had a bit of fun with the drama, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-62818523\">telling<\/a> a crowd at his next concert, \u201cI just popped very quickly to Venice to spit on Chris Pine \u2026 but fret not, we\u2019re back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of this \u2014 and more, though I won\u2019t bore you \u2014 is the backdrop to Don\u2019t Worry Darling, a psychological thriller about a woman trapped in an eerily perfect world with a dark secret. Whether the film\u2019s drama was real and caused by poor directing (not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/shapiro-it-doesnt-take-much-to-become-a-feminist-hero\">sexism<\/a>), or whether it was drummed up to build hype for the film, viewers might find the movie itself a little disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>After all, when the highest praise Styles can come up with is that it \u201cfeels like a movie,\u201d it doesn\u2019t inspire a lot of confidence in what you\u2019re about to see. But Don\u2019t Worry Darling does \u201cfeel like a movie\u201d in a visual sense: its colorful, 1950s-style backdrop is gorgeous and flawlessly crafted. The costuming and the set design shine, as does the cinematography, with aerial shots intermingled with close-ups cleverly placed to add to the viewer\u2019s increasing sense of disorientation and dread. And then, there\u2019s the plot.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t Worry Darling follows Alice (Pugh), a beautiful housewife seemingly living the domestic dream: She\u2019s married to Jack (Styles), for whom she cooks and cleans their spotless home while he\u2019s off at work all day. But she has no idea what he does.<\/p>\n<p>The couple is one of many in the Victory Project, a collection of people living together in a mid-century desert oasis. While the women stay home during the day, taking ballet classes, shopping, or caring for their children, the men go off to work, driving outside of the town into the desert, a place the wives are never allowed to go.<\/p>\n<p>Alice and the other wives wonder what their husbands are doing all day, but they\u2019re not supposed to ask, so they don\u2019t \u2014 that is, until Alice sees a plane crash in the desert, racing after it to see if she can help and setting off a course of events that lead her to realize that the Victory Project is not as benevolent as it seems.<\/p>\n<p>Having already starred in another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt8772262\/\">two-hour film about gaslighting<\/a>, Pugh excels as Alice. Her performance is extraordinary as always, and Styles\u2019 isn\u2019t terrible, though LaBeouf would have been a better fit for the role.<\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t reveal the film\u2019s final twists, but I will say that Don\u2019t Worry Darling is a commentary on weak men and the problems that arise when they have only artificial and selfish outlets for embracing their masculinity. Jack and other men in his community revere Victory Project founder Frank, repeating his platitudes back to him and treating him like a god. It\u2019s clear that they would do anything to win his approval, putting their wives and families second to their idol.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wilde, the film is meant to be a commentary on the incel or involuntary celibate community, made up of men who feel entitled to women\u2019s love. Really, the film could also be a commentary on any other form of women\u2019s objectification, but all of this potential falls flat thanks to Wilde\u2019s myopic mission.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview released before the film came out, Wilde revealed that she based the film\u2019s villain, Frank (Chris Pine), on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/watch\/jordan-peterson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jordan Peterson<\/a>. Yes, you read that right. At least you know you\u2019re doing something correct when you literally become a Hollywood antagonist.<\/p>\n<p>Wilde erroneously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interviewmagazine.com\/film\/olivia-wilde-needs-to-be-in-charge\">lumps<\/a> Peterson in with the incel movement, saying that Peterson \u201cis someone that legitimizes certain aspects of their movement because he\u2019s a former professor, he\u2019s an author, he wears a suit, so they feel like this is a real philosophy that should be taken seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These incels who supposedly worship Peterson, Wilde says, \u201cbelieve that society has now robbed them \u2014 that the idea of feminism is working against nature, and that we must be put back into the correct place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Peterson took the comparison in stride, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/exclusive-jordan-peterson-hits-back-at-director-olivia-wilde-over-this-insane-man-comments\">saying<\/a> that Pine \u201chas a reputation as quite an attractive man \u2026 so that could be worse.\u201d But on a more serious note, if Peterson\u2019s work does appeal to incels, it won\u2019t coddle them.
