Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) has called the Department of Justice (DOJ)\u2019s failure to count nearly 1,000 prison deaths a \u201cshocking gap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsgac.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/2022-09-20%20PSI%20Staff%20Report%20-%20Uncounted%20Deaths%20in%20America%27s%20Prisons%20and%20Jails.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) on a 10-month bi-partisan investigation was revealed on Sept. 20 at a Senate hearing. The investigation focused on whether the DOJ has complied with the Death in Custody Reporting Act (DCRA) of 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ve found are shocking gaps in federal oversight,\u201d Ossoff, who led the probe, said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/sen-ossoff-details-probe-nearly-1000-uncounted-doj-prison-deaths-2021\">interview<\/a> with Fox News Digital last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, in 2021 alone, the Department of Justice failed to count nearly 1,000 deaths in jails and prisons nationwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Georgia lawmaker, the probe revealed that even when deaths were counted, reports on \u201cmore than a third of them \u2026 failed to document the circumstances of death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Deaths Include Many Pre-trial Detainees <\/p>\n<p>Ossoff further stressed that many of those who died were pre-trial detainees.\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019re in custody, they\u2019ve not yet been tried or convicted of any crime,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The congressman pointed to testimony from Americans who are victims of the misconduct to prove this point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFolks like Ms. [Belinda] Maley, whose son, Matthew [Loflin], died of congestive heart failure\u2014preventable\u2014 while he was awaiting trial, having been convicted of no crime,\u201d Ossoff said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe played the audio of the last phone call that they shared, where the young man behind bars said he was going to die, said he was in pain,\u201d the senator added. \u201cBut his mother couldn\u2019t help him, and he didn\u2019t get any help while he was inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his opinion, those deaths can be prevented if accurate information is made known.\u00a0\u201cWe need to understand who\u2019s dying, why they are dying, where they are dying, so that we can reduce deaths in custody across the country,\u201d Ossoff said.<\/p>\n<p>Ossoff stressed that the oath he took<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
