Tim Ryan sounds a lot different running for Senate than he did running for president.<\/p>\n<p>On a campaign tour with plumbers and steamfitters in eastern Ohio earlier this month, Ryan professed his unwavering support for the state\u2019s lucrative natural gas industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/natural-gas\/where-our-natural-gas-comes-from.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a> to the Department of Energy, Ohio is a top 10 gas-producing state and a net exporter with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/state\/print.php?sid=OH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6 percent<\/a> of the nation\u2019s reserves and production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to go all in on natural gas,\u201d Ryan told reporters in early September. \u201cThis is a hell of an opportunity for Eastern Ohio. Great for jobs and the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Days later, Ryan doubled down as a \u201cbig supporter\u201d of natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve built power plants in my district, natural gas, liquid natural gas, get it, move it, build the pipelines, get it out of here,\u201d Ryan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.richlandsource.com\/news\/elections\/tim-ryan-a-conversation-about-his-campaign-for-u-s-senate\/article_d1e9c3d4-3181-11ed-828d-93233bc4cc0e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> a local newspaper. \u201cWhy would I not be for that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He wasn\u2019t for it when he was chasing the Democratic presidential nomination just three years ago. <\/p>\n<p>On the campaign trail in 2019, the Democrat congressman who represents an industrial district in northeastern Ohio endorsed plans to regulate hydraulic fracturing out of business. In 2014, as many as 95 percent of new wells were being drilled with fracking technology, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/energy-secretary-ernest-monizs-statement-senate-committee-appropriations-driving-innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the Energy Department. Hydraulic fracturing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=34732#:~:text=Hydraulic%20fracturing%20involves%20forcing%20a,wedges%20open%20the%20expanding%20fractures.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still accounts<\/a> for most new oil and gas wells today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/politics\/policy-2020\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Speaking<\/a> to The Washington Post, however, the presidential candidate left the door open to a federal fracking ban if policymakers refuse to ramp up regulation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to significantly ramp up our oversight and regulation of the industry and its practices, especially in regard to its use and disposal of water, as well as methane leaks,\u201d Ryan said. \u201cIf the industry cannot rapidly innovate on these issues, I believe the federal government would need to step in and halt fracking operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan went on to defend President Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-climate-change-environment-and-nature-business-9751c4909a8b1baba28f3bcff9d5fa6e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">illegal<\/a> suspension of oil and gas operations on federal lands just last year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great compromise that protects our national parks and federal land while still allows the pursuit of natural gas,\u201d Ryan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vindy.com\/news\/local-news\/2021\/01\/biden-drilling-order-shows-opposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>But President Biden\u2019s suspension, which lasted roughly 18 months, tanked domestic oil and gas production to deliver the highest energy prices Americans have seen in a generation. While no plans were in the pipeline to drill in Yosemite, 11 percent of the nation\u2019s gas production comes from public lands and waters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.api.org\/news-policy-and-issues\/blog\/2022\/03\/24\/drilling-down-on-federal-leasing-facts#:~:text=The%20Truth%3A%20Oil%20production%20from,total%20U.S.%20natural%20gas%20production.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the American Petroleum Institute (API). <\/p>\n<p>Ryan also voted for the Democrats\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-inflation-reduction-act-is-anything-but-spending-power-supply-demand-imbalance-restrictions-regulation-11659289812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dubiously named<\/a> \u201cInflation Reduction Act\u201d which included $<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/09\/democrats-spending-bill-includes-20-billion-in-new-energy-taxes-that-will-drive-prices-higher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20 billion<\/a> in new taxes on energy.<\/p>\n<p>Mandy Gunasekara, who served as EPA chief of staff under President Donald Trump, called Ryan a \u201crubber stamp\u201d for the Biden administration\u2019s \u201cradical environmental policies aimed at putting Ohio\u2019s energy industry out of business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe growth and success of Ohio\u2019s natural gas industry has occurred despite Tim Ryan\u2019s best efforts to shut it down,\u201d Gunasekara told The Federalist. \u201cTim Ryan pretends like he cares about Ohio\u2019s natural gas industry when on the campaign trail, but in Congress, he has used his legislative authority to shutter its development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan wasn\u2019t running in a close race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. The Ohio congressman barely qualified for the first two debates and dropped out by the end of October 2019. According to polls in this year\u2019s Senate contest, however, which are often manipulated to reflect media narratives, Ryan is locked with Republican venture capitalist J.D. Vance in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2022\/senate\/oh\/ohio_senate_vance_vs_ryan-7624.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one-point race<\/a>, in which Vance is up. The two candidates are competing for an open seat left vacant by retiring Republican Sen.
