Democratic candidate Tina Kotek is neck and neck with Drazan at 31 percent\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/oregoncapitalchronicle.com\/2022\/07\/08\/new-poll-shows-reasons-for-republican-optimism-in-oregon-legislative-races\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second time<\/a> this year a poll has shown Kotek trailing behind. Independent candidate Betsy Johnson sits at 18 percent.<\/p>\n<p>If she wins, Drazan would be the first Republican governor elected in Oregon since 1982, when GOP incumbent Victor Atiyeh won reelection.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes as Democrats mount a massive <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/elections\/democrats-pour-over-1m-into-oregon-governors-race-as-blue-state-becomes-toss-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campaign<\/a> to keep Oregon blue. The Democratic Governors Association this year has donated more than $3 million to Kotek, including $1.25 million in September. The <em>Cook Political Report<\/em> and the University of Virginia&#8217;s Center for Politics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cookpolitical.com\/analysis\/governors\/oregon-governor\/oregon-governor-moves-toss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have both<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/centerforpolitics.org\/crystalball\/articles\/the-gubernatorial-races-look-to-the-west\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moved<\/a> the race to a &#8220;tossup&#8221; since August.<\/p>\n<p>The election has become a referendum on the liberal state&#8217;s approach to rising violent crime and rampant drug use. Portland, Oregon&#8217;s largest city, saw the most homicides in its history last year. Nearly 90 percent of voters say the quality of life has worsened in the city, according to a February poll, and a quarter say crime is Portland&#8217;s biggest problem.<\/p>\n<p>Kotek has largely embraced the permissive approach toward crime and drugs of outgoing Gov. Kate Brown (D.). As House speaker in 2020, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wweek.com\/news\/2020\/07\/01\/oregon-house-speaker-tina-kotek-admonishes-mayor-wheeler-in-letter-about-portland-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sided with rioters<\/a> who destroyed local businesses and attacked police during summer protests.<\/p>\n<p>During a <a href=\"https:\/\/oregoncapitalchronicle.com\/2022\/09\/27\/oregon-governor-candidates-debate-education-housing-abortion-in-bend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">debate<\/a> Tuesday night, Kotek defended Measure 110, a 2020 ballot measure that decriminalized all drugs in small amounts.
