Is that necessary?\u201d the radio host asked. \u201cIn the current climate crisis, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s necessary travel,\u201d Cook responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was the last time you were on a plane?\u201d du Plessis-Allan pressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure. Maybe a few months ago, to be honest,\u201d Cook hesitantly replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019d you go?\u201d du Plessis-Allan asked again.<\/p>\n<p>After a moment, Cook admitted: \u201cFiji.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIzzy!\u201d the host shouted amid uncontrollable laughter. \u201cIzzy! Don\u2019t you care about the climate, Izzy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked why she went to the South Pacific island paradise, Cook said that her parents brought her on vacation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you embarrassed your parents did that to the planet and then forced you to do it as well?\u201d du Plessis-Allan questioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course I am not embarrassed,\u201d Cook replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you have a terrible time?\u201d du Plessis-Allan pressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot really,\u201d Cook said before the host cut her off with more guffawing.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the point raised by du Plessis-Allan, Rose Cook \u2014 the mother of Izzy Cook \u2014 penned an <a href=\"https:\/\/thespinoff.co.nz\/media\/25-09-2022\/heather-du-plessis-allan-should-be-ashamed-of-how-she-bullied-my-daughter\">opinion piece<\/a> for New Zealand news outlet The Spinoff contending that her daughter was \u201cbullied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommentators like du Plessis-Allan don\u2019t give a s*** about climate change,\u201d wrote the mother, who admitted that she and her daughter flew to Fiji in July. \u201cThey don\u2019t care that Arctic ice is melting at four times the expected rate, or that we are seeing more and more extreme weather events killing and displacing people across the globe\u2026 These sorts of commentators use ad hominem arguments and \u2018gotcha\u2019 moments for point-scoring and discrediting their opponents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rose Cook also praised her daughter\u2019s conscientious lifestyle. \u201cShe\u2019s vegetarian, uses public transport, and buys second-hand\u2026 The conversation needs to be about radically reimagining the way we live, building sustainable communities, and producing and consuming locally, not gotchas and petty point-scoring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fiji is roughly 1,600 miles away from Wellington, the capital of New Zealand \u2014 approximately the same distance from New York City to Austin, Texas. An airplane produces roughly 53 pounds of carbon dioxide per mile, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/blueskymodel.org\/air-mile#:~:text=On%20average%2C%20a%20plane%20produces,(CO2)%20per%20mile.\">estimate<\/a> from the open-source emissions project BlueSkyModel.<\/p>\n<p>The interview occurred as the European Union, which has adopted the official <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/clima\/eu-action\/climate-strategies-targets\/2050-long-term-strategy_en\">policy<\/a> of becoming \u201ca climate-neutral society\u201d by 2050, struggles to secure reliable oil and gas supplies amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. While many European nations resort to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/europeans-resort-to-burning-wood-amid-desperate-search-for-energy-now-greta-thunberg-wants-to-limit-that-too\">burning wood<\/a> chips, adolescent Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg sharply rebuked the move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForest biomass takes minutes to burn, whereas it takes anywhere from decades to centuries for the climate and environmentally harmful tree plantations to resequester the carbon emitted,\u201d the 19-year-old wrote in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/commentisfree\/2022\/sep\/05\/burning-forests-energy-renewable-eu-wood-climate\">article<\/a> for The Guardian. \u201cThis equals decades of carbon debts that we do not have time for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Izzy Cook is far from the only climate activist accused of unnecessary plane travel.
