US Navy Photo<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. \u2013 Five years after its commissioning, the world\u2019s largest warship is in shape to deploy, the officer who oversees the Navy\u2019s carrier program said last week.<span id=\"more-97602\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>USS <em>Gerald R. Ford<\/em> (CVN-78) quietly reached its initial operating capability in December and has been in workups since completing a six-month repair availability in March following explosive shock trials off the coast of Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s fully delivered now, she\u2019s met her initial operating capability,\u201d Rear Adm. James Downey told USNI News last week during the American Society of Naval Engineers\u2019 annual Fleet Maintenance and Modernization Symposium.<br \/>\u201cShe\u2019s fully through the operational threshold.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since leaving the repair period, <em>Ford <\/em>and its crew have been operating at a steady pace off of the East Coast with elements of Carrier Air Wing 8. The crew aboard completed system qualification tests, flight deck certification, three phases of air warfare training, and a Combat Systems Operational Readiness Evaluation that included 11,000 aircraft launches and arrested landings, according to the service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last couple of years, she\u2019s spent 250 to 300 days at sea,\u201d Downey said.<br \/>\u201cThat\u2019s coming up on about two deployments [of steaming days].\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_93656\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/HSM0527-scaled.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93656\" data-attachment-id=\"93656\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2022\/09\/26\/peo-carriers-uss-gerald-r-ford-fully-delivered-ready-to-deploy\/_hsm0527\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/HSM0527-scaled.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"3927,5883\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{\" aperture \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-93656\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">USS Gerald R. USNI News Photo<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The delay for the $13 billion <em>Ford <\/em>to pull its share of the operational load was in large part due to the integration of a bevy of new technologies that Pentagon leaders required the Navy to include in the new class.<\/p>\n<p>Those included the Electromagnetic Launching System, known as EMALS, for the aircraft, the Advanced Arresting Gear and the Dual Band air search radar. Those also included the installation of 11 Advanced Weapons Elevators which took several years. The last elevator was delivered in December.<\/p>\n<p>Following the completion of the training and certifications, <em>Ford<\/em> departed Naval Station Norfolk, Va., on Sept. 16 ahead of an Atlantic training cruise later this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has every certification that every other carrier has \u2013 from flying to live weapons,\u201d Downey told USNI News.<br \/><strong><br \/><\/strong>As of Monday, <em>Ford <\/em>was operating in the Virginia Capes Operating Areas, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2022\/09\/26\/usni-news-fleet-and-marine-tracker-sept-26-2022\">according to the USNI News Fleet and Marine Tracker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The upcoming underway won\u2019t be the same as a full carrier strike group deployment, but will be an extended training cruise meant to give the operational commander a chance to get a better sense of how <em>Ford<\/em> operates, two congressional sources briefed on the Navy\u2019s plan told USNI News in the last several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The Navy has billed the underway as a \u201cservice retained deployment,\u201d which doesn\u2019t require the same certifications for a fully deployed CSG, the Hill sources confirmed to USNI News. The training cruise will partner the strike group with allied ships and will inform a traditional deployment in 2023, USNI News has learned.<\/p>\n<p>When <em>Ford<\/em> finally enters the deployment cycle, it will ease the burden of the existing East Coast carrier fleet, which has seen a string of extended deployments over the last several years.
