Version: 4.0.47--><p>Oregon State University (OSU) researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/today.oregonstate.edu\/news\/bipedal-robot-developed-oregon-state-achieves-guinness-world-record-100-meters#:~:text=Cassie%2C%20the%20first%20bipedal%20robot,on%20a%20single%20battery%20charge.\">announced<\/a> Tuesday that a bipedal robot named Cassie set a new Guinness World Record for running a 100-meter dash.<\/p>\n<p>Cassie, invented at the university\u2019s College of Engineering and produced by Agility Robotics, crossed the finish line at 24.73 seconds at the OSU\u2019s Whyte Track and Field Center, making it a record for a bipedal robot.<\/p>\n<p>Within the time frame, Cassie started by standing in an upright position and completed the race in the same stance without falling.<\/p>\n<p>OSU computer science professor Alan Fern, who collaborated with the robot\u2019s research and development team, described Cassie to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.klcc.org\/science-technology\/2022-09-27\/osu-robot-earns-guinness-world-record-for-100-meter-dash\">KLCC<\/a> as a robot without a head, arms, or eyes and \u201cjust has legs and basically a little torso.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Cassie can get around by just feel, more or less,\u201d Fern said.<\/p>\n<p>However, Fern told the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/today.oregonstate.edu\/news\/bipedal-robot-developed-oregon-state-achieves-guinness-world-record-100-meters#:~:text=Cassie%2C%20the%20first%20bipedal%20robot,on%20a%20single%20battery%20charge.\">media<\/a> that starting and stopping in a standing position makes for a more difficult task than running \u2014 similar to how taking off and landing are harder than flying a plane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis 100-meter result was achieved by a deep collaboration between mechanical hardware design and advanced artificial intelligence for the control of that hardware,\u201d Fern said.<\/p>\n<p>According to OSU news, Cassie trained for one year in a simulation setting with a full week of a computing technique called parallelization, which simultaneously entails multiple processes and calculations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCassie has been a platform for pioneering research in robot learning for locomotion,\u201d Devin Crowley, project leader, told OSU news.<\/p>\n<p>Before setting the new world record, Cassie also ran a 5K in just over 53 minutes last year.<\/p>\n<p>Crowley said completing a 5K showed the Robo-athlete\u2019s reliability and endurance, leaving researchers wondering how fast Cassie could run.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat led the research team to shift its focus to speed,\u201d Crowley said.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Hurst, chief technology officer at Agility Robotics and a robotics professor at Oregon State, told university media that being recognized by Guinness World Records, which dubs itself as the ultimate authority on record-breaking achievements, is \u201ca big watershed moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may be the first bipedal robot to learn to run, but it won\u2019t be the last,\u201d he said. \u201cI believe control approaches like this are going to be a huge part of the future of robotics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hurst said the exciting part of the race is the potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing learned policies for robot control is a very new field, and this 100-meter dash is showing better performance than other control methods,\u201d Hurst said. \u201cI think progress is going to accelerate from here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hurst directed Cassie\u2019s research team with a 16-month, $1 million grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which the National Science Foundation also funded.<\/p>\n<p>Guinness World Records\u2019 website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/world-records\/629600-fastest-100-m-by-a-bipedal-robot\">reports<\/a> other titles for fast robots exist, \u201cbut this one is based on a standard competitive human task. It is not just a measure of momentary top-speed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is effectively average speed sustained across a certain distance and under the significant constraints that it must start in a standing pose and return to that pose after crossing the finish line,\u201d the website reads. \u201cIt cannot simply run 100 metres and crash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cassie set the new record on May 11, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Cassie and her team of researchers\u2019 groundbreaking achievements in computer science and technology, the android still wouldn\u2019t do well against humankind.<\/p>\n<p>Usain Bolt ran the 100-meter dash in the final of the 2009 World Athletics Championship race at 9.58 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Bolt still holds the world record.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Cassie the robot, invented at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EngineeringOSU?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@EngineeringOSU<\/a> and produced by OSU spinout company <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/agilityrobotics?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@agilityrobotics<\/a>, has established a Guinness World Record <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GWR?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GWR<\/a> for the fastest 100 meters by a bipedal robot: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NADorse8GY\">https:\/\/t.co\/NADorse8GY<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ingh8iPXOu\">pic.twitter.com\/ingh8iPXOu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Oregon State News (@oregonstatenews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/oregonstatenews\/status\/1574796924326010880?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 27, 2022<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oregon State University (OSU) researchers announced Tuesday that a bipedal robot named Cassie set a new Guinness World Record for running a 100-meter dash.
