I have reviewed the material we are releasing, starting today, and I encourage others to review it as well,\u201d said Noem on Twitter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Now that the investigation has closed and charges have been filed, I believe the Attorney General should resign. I have reviewed the material we are releasing, starting today, and I encourage others to review it as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Governor Kristi Noem (@govkristinoem) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/govkristinoem\/status\/1364272186588946433?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 23, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Back in the summer, Ravnsborg, 44, was driving home at night from a fundraiser when he called authorities to report he hit what he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/south-dakota-ag-releases-statement-after-discovering-human-body-by-highway-after-he-thought-he-hit-a-deer\">believed to be a large animal<\/a> on the highway. No one managed to find what he could have hit until Ravnsborg revisited the site of the accident the following morning, and found the body of a man lying in a ditch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Although he wasn\u2019t on his cell phone at the time of the crash, authorities said Sunday that he did use his cell phone earlier on that same drive. Ravnsborg is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/south-dakota-ag-facing-three-misdemeanors-after-fatally-striking-pedestrian-along-highway\">facing three misdemeanors<\/a>, including one count of operating his car while using a cellphone, one count of failing to stay in his lane on the highway, and one count for careless driving, as The Daily Wire previously reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A bipartisan group of South Dakota lawmakers are also supporting articles of impeachment against Ravnsborg, including both the Democratic leader and the Republican leader, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusleader.com\/story\/news\/2021\/02\/23\/kristi-noem-calls-jason-ravnsborg-resisn\/4558686001\/\">Argus Leader<\/a>. The two articles, filed Tuesday, accuse Ravnsborg of failing \u201cto meet the standard\u201d of the attorney general\u2019s office and engaging in \u201cunbecoming actions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis isn\u2019t about party or politics,\u201d said Kent Peterson, the Republican House majority leader, reports the news agency. \u201cIt\u2019s about doing the right thing for South Dakota. We must hold our elected leaders to a high standard. In this case, the attorney general has failed to meet that standard, and we owe it to the people to bring these Articles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A spokesperson for Ravnsborg said the attorney general doesn\u2019t plan to resign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAt no time has this issue impeded his ability to do the work of the office,\u201d said Mike Deaver, a Ravsnborg spokesperson,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusleader.com\/story\/news\/2021\/02\/23\/kristi-noem-calls-jason-ravnsborg-resisn\/4558686001\/\"><span>reports<\/span><\/a> <span>the Argus Leader. \u201cInstead, he has handled some of the largest settlements and legislative issues the state has ever been through.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Emily Sovell,\u00a0 the Hyde County Deputy State\u2019s Attorney, explained Sunday that more serious charges, such as manslaughter, couldn\u2019t apply. \u201cOperation of a motor vehicle in violation of a law is not in and of itself sufficient to constitute the recklessness required for that manslaughter statue, even if a person is killed as a result,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There also wasn\u2019t evidence that Ravnsborg was driving in a reckless manner at the time of the crash, or that he was driving while intoxicated, according to state authorities.
