This proves that, if Horowitz had put in a little more effort, he could have gotten it up to at least 35.<\/p>\n<p>From the Times:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>With the hard-right candidate Giorgia Meloni ahead before Sunday\u2019s election, Italy could get its first leader whose party traces its roots to the wreckage of<strong>\u00a0Fascism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By\u00a0Jason Horowitz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sept. 24, 2022<\/p>\n<p>ROME \u2014<em>\u00a0<\/em>Giorgia Meloni, Italy\u2019s hard-right leader, resents having to talk about\u00a0<strong>Fascism<\/strong>. She has publicly, and in multiple languages, said that the Italian right has \u201chanded\u00a0<strong>Fascism<\/strong>\u00a0over to history for decades now.\u201d She argued that \u201cthe problem with\u00a0<strong>Fascism<\/strong>\u00a0in Italy always begins with the electoral campaign,\u201d when the Italian left, she said, wheels out \u201cthe black wave\u201d to smear its opponents\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>More than 70 years after Nazis and\u00a0<strong>Fascists<\/strong>\u00a0nearly destroyed Europe, formerly taboo parties with Nazi or\u00a0<strong>Fascist<\/strong>\u00a0heritages that were long marginalized have elbowed their way into the mainstream. Some are even winning. A page of European history seems to be turning\u2026.<\/p>\n<div id=\"subscribe\" class=\"email-signup inarticle\">\n<h4>Support Conservative Voices!<\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Sign up to receive the latest<\/strong> political news, insight, and commentary delivered directly to your inbox.<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p>But it is Italy, the birthplace of\u00a0<strong>Fascism<\/strong>, that looks likely to be led not only by its first female prime minister in Ms. Meloni but the first Italian leader whose party can trace its roots back to the wreckage of Italian\u00a0<strong>Fascism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have become used to them,\u201d said John Foot, a historian of\u00a0<strong>Fascism<\/strong>\u00a0and the author of a new book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/us\/blood-and-power-9781408897935\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blood and Power: The Rise and Fall of Italian\u00a0<\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/us\/blood-and-power-9781408897935\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fascism<\/a><\/strong>.\u201d \u201cThe taboo is long gone.\u201d \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Germany, which was clearly on the wrong side of history and made facing and remembering its Nazi past a national project woven inextricably into the postwar fabric of its institutions and society, Italy had one foot on each side, and so had a claim to victimization by\u00a0<strong>Fascism<\/strong>, having switched allegiances during the war\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>There was a belief, the Italian writer Umberto Eco wrote in his classic 1995 essay \u201cUr\u00a0<strong>Fascism<\/strong>,\u201d or \u201cEternal\u00a0<strong>Fascism<\/strong>,\u201d that the \u201cmemory of those terrible years should be repressed.\u201d \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Italy had ignored much of that advice during its postwar amnesty program that sought to incorporate post-<strong>Fascist<\/strong>\u00a0elements. But it also kept the party established by the former\u00a0<strong>Fascists<\/strong>, the Italian Social Movement \u2014 which pushed for a strong state, tough on crime and opposed to abortion and divorce \u2014 away from power in the following decades.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Italy\u2019s left, dominated by the largest Communist Party in Western Europe, had the advantage of being anti-<strong>Fascist<\/strong>, which allowed its leaders to have institutional roles, political influence and cultural dominance, which they used to wield the \u201c<strong>Fascist<\/strong>\u201d label against any range of political enemies until the term was drained of much of its meaning.<\/p>\n<p>That wobbly status quo came crashing down after a sprawling bribery scandal in the early 1990s toppled Italy\u2019s power structure \u2014 and with it the barriers that had kept the post-<strong>Fascists<\/strong>\u00a0out of power.<\/p>\n<p>It was around that time that Ms. Meloni entered politics, becoming active in the Youth Front of the Italian Social Movement, the heirs to Italy\u2019s post-<strong>Fascist<\/strong>\u00a0legacy.<\/p>\n<p>She sought new symbols and heroes to distance the party from its unapologetically\u00a0<strong>Fascist<\/strong>\u00a0forbearers, but also to correct what she considered politicized history\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>But it was not until 1994, when the conservative media mogul Silvio Berlusconi entered politics, that Ms. Meloni and her fellows in the post-<strong>Fascist<\/strong>\u00a0milieu got their real breakthrough. \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Her proposals, characterized by protectionism, tough-on-crime measures and protecting the traditional family, have a continuity with the post-<strong>Fascist<\/strong>\u00a0parties, though updated to excoriate L.G.B.T. \u201clobbies\u201d and migrants. \u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Constitution was born of resistance and anti-<strong>Fascism<\/strong>,\u201d the leader of the left, Enrico Letta, responded, saying that Ms. Meloni had revealed her true face, and that the Constitution \u201cmust not be touched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The left sees in her crescendoing rhetoric, cult of personality style and hard-right positions many of the hallmarks of an ideology that Eco famously sought to pin down despite\u00a0<strong>Fascism\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cfuzziness.\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Just this week, one of the party\u2019s top leaders was caught giving a\u00a0<strong>fascist<\/strong>\u00a0salute and one of its candidates was suspended for flatteringly comparing Ms. Meloni with Hitler.\u00a0\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Meloni has also apparently shed a deep suspicion of the United States, rampant in post-<strong>Fascism<\/strong>, and staunchly aligned herself with the West against Russia in support of Ukraine. \u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA historical judgment,\u201d of Mussolini and\u00a0<strong>Fascism<\/strong>, Ms. Meloni said in an interview last month, could be done only by \u201cputting everything on the table \u2014 and then you decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>If only Italians knew who David Duke was, the Times could have demanded that Ms. Meloni \u201cdisavow\u201d him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Syndicated with permission from <a href=\"https:\/\/anncoulter.substack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ann Coulter\u2019s Unsafe Substack<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>RELATED LINKS:\u00a0<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Giorgia Meloni is expected to crush Italy\u2019s elections today \u2014 (Editor\u2019s note: she won) by running against the crisis of migrants pouring in from Africa and the Middle East.
