Chip Roy explained how Congress\u2019s current spending habits are \u201cfueling rampant inflation and funding the Biden administration\u2019s radical agenda,\u201d which includes \u201cempowering authoritarian bureaucrats at agencies like the IRS and FBI, implementing open-border policies that are threatening [American] communities, imposing COVID-19 mandates that shut down schools,\u201d and \u201cforcing [U.S.] military servicemembers out of their jobs, and advancing self-destructive energy policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the September 30th federal funding deadline approaches, Republicans must do what is necessary to ensure that not one additional penny will go toward this administration\u2019s radical, inflationary agenda,\u201d the letter said. \u201cAny legislation that sets the stage for a \u2018lame duck\u2019 fight on government funding gives Democrats one final opportunity to pass that agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To date, the letter has been signed by 42 House Republicans. Utah Sen. Mike Lee has also sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lee.senate.gov\/services\/files\/F184F647-1CA9-4477-AE80-56F37E9F808C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">similarly worded letter<\/a> to his GOP colleagues in the Senate, which has garnered 14 signers total.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"aHZb8vdK7FoGrsimApPBg2zxjS43MV1CTUfWkuhJRtcQNX\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The following 42 House members &#038; 14 senate members have pledged to AT LEAST oppose any \u201comnibus\u201d spending bill OR \u201cCR\u201d into a lame duck\u2026 hardly a big lift, when we SHOULD be holding up funding to force border security\u2026 (2\/6) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StandUpForAmerica?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#StandUpForAmerica<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NotOneMorePenny?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NotOneMorePenny<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chip Roy (@chiproytx) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chiproytx\/status\/1574446850303721474?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 26, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>With funding for the federal government set to run out by the end of the week, Congress is scrambling to pass some form of a Continuing Resolution, or \u201cCR,\u201d to avert a partial government shutdown. Previous estimates have shown that the vast majority of the federal government remains fully operational during a shutdown, with only about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/wheres-sense-of-crisis-in-a-17-government-shutdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">17 percent<\/a> of total federal operations ceasing during such an event.<\/p>\n<p>Released late Monday night by Senate Democrat leadership, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.appropriations.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/H6833AM07.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proposed spending package<\/a> would keep the government funded through Dec. 16 and, per usual, includes numerous garbage spending items.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation \u201cincludes roughly $12 billion<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>for Ukraine assistance,\u201d NPR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/09\/27\/1125108624\/government-funding-bill-shutdown-continuing-resolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> on Tuesday, which would bring the U.S. spending total for the country Russia invaded earlier this year to a whopping $65 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The measure also includes \u201c$1 billion to boost funding for a low income home heating program,\u201d as well as legislation drafted by Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., that would overhaul \u201chow the government approves permits for energy production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manchin had previously negotiated with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to have the bill attached to the CR in exchange for supporting the deceptively named \u201cInflation Reduction Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy aren\u2019t all Republicans on [this] letter,\u201d Roy said during a recent interview, citing his efforts to fiscally stymie Biden\u2019s agenda. \u201cIf you\u2019re not going to be willing to pick a fight on the border, or pick a fight on vaccine mandates, or pick a fight on the energy destruction of this country \u2026 can you at least just not give Democrats the pen again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate is currently scheduled to hold a procedural vote on the proposed CR on Tuesday evening, according to NPR.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Shawn Fleetwood is a Staff Writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
