Biden also decided to extend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/nationwide-pause-on-student-loan-debt-set-to-expire-biden-officials-expected-to-update-borrowers-soon\">pause<\/a> on federal student loan repayment to January 2023 and will permit borrowers with undergraduate loans to cap payments at 5% of monthly income.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint added that the Department of Education failed to comply with the \u201cnotice-and-comment process required for rulemaking\u201d when charting the debt cancellation policy and did not \u201csolicit any public input.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancelling student debt is unjust to those who have paid their loans or never took any. It will only lead to more calls for government intervention in education at taxpayers\u2019 expense,\u201d Pacific Legal Foundation senior attorney Steve Simpson added. \u201cLoan cancellation will make Americans more divided, as those who paid their loans \u2014 or never went to college \u2014 will have good reason to think that we no longer have a government of, by, and for the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, one-third of student debt is held by the wealthiest 20% of households, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/student-loan-forgiveness-is-regressive-whether-measured-by-income-education-or-wealth\/\">data<\/a> from the Brookings Institution. In comparison, only 8% is owed by the bottom 20% \u2014 largely because graduate degrees are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/schumer-slams-fat-cats-who-dont-want-to-cancel-student-loans\">often necessary<\/a> for high-paying professions.<\/p>\n<p>Eliminating $10,000 of student loans per borrower will cost $298 billion in 2022 and a total of $329 billion by 2031 if the policy is renewed each year, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-student-loan-cancellation-would-cost-330-billion-and-largely-help-the-wealthy\">nonpartisan analysis<\/a> from the University of Pennsylvania\u2019s Wharton School, which also found that 42% of the benefit would impact Americans earning more than $82,400 per year. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/system\/files\/2022-09\/58494-Student-Loans.pdf\">estimate<\/a> from the Congressional Budget Office forecasts that the overall cost will be $400 billion, with another $20 billion incurred by the extended pause on repayments.<\/p>\n<p>The Wharton analysts said that a permanent loan cancellation announcement could prompt students to \u201ceventually reorganize their financing toward additional borrowing.\u201d Although the policy could increase access to higher education, universities themselves could capture the value \u201cin the form of higher prices\u201d as they raise tuition.<\/p>\n<p>The Pacific Legal Foundation contended that the student loan cancellation is an \u201celection year ploy\u201d \u2014 marking the most severe abuse of power since former President Donald Trump imposed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cdc-extends-eviction-moratorium-claims-final-extension-as-landlords-continue-to-struggle\">nationwide eviction moratorium<\/a> ahead of the 2020 election through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
