Instead, the 25-page document\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/22925212-sittenfeld-juror-x-ruling?responsive=1&amp;title=1\">(pdf)<\/a> was issued as a \u201csweeping opinion\u201d affecting cases throughout the four-state region that the court covers: Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Such controversies over alleged juror misconduct are expected to surface more frequently, experts said, given the near-universal use of electronic devices and difficulty in policing jurors\u2019 use of them during trials.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/6th-Circuit-Court-of-Appeals-Cincinnati-Ohio.jpg\"><\/a> The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, Ohio, has ruled on a case of alleged juror misconduct involving cellphone use during the trial of a former Cincinnati city councilman. (Photo courtesy of the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals) Courts\u2019 Authority Over Jurors is Limited <\/p>\n<p>While courts possess \u201cinherent authority\u201d to question jurors about possible misconduct, that authority is limited, wrote Alice Batchelder, a senior U.S. circuit judge.<\/p>\n<p>Courts \u201ccannot search jurors\u2019 personal devices and steamroll their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-fourth-amendment\">Fourth Amendment<\/a> rights in the process,\u201d Batchelder wrote.
