Trainings, meetings, and new policies pushing racial equity\u2014including potentially linking federal salaries to racial goals\u2014have already taken place in many federal agencies.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2021, one of President Biden\u2019s first executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/01\/20\/executive-order-advancing-racial-equity-and-support-for-underserved-communities-through-the-federal-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">orders<\/a>, \u201cOn Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities\u201d, directed the Federal Government to \u201cpursue a comprehensive approach to advancing equity for all, including people of color and others who have been historically underserved, marginalized, and adversely affected by persistent poverty and inequality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While racism has been part of American history since Columbus, racial discrimination has been illegal under federal law for 58 years.<\/p>\n<p>The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin, prohibiting unequal treatment in hiring, education, and public accommodations. Countless state and local laws also prohibit racial discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>So what does Biden\u2019s executive order mean by the pursuit of \u201cracial equity\u201d?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.raceforward.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According<\/a> to Race Forward, the New York nonprofit training federal employees, \u201cRacial equity is a process of eliminating racial disparities and improving outcomes for everyone.\u201d The goal of racial equity, says Race Forward\u2019s website, is to create \u201cmeasurable change in the lives of people of color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a Kamala Harris campaign video <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KamalaHarris\/status\/1322963321994289154?s=20&amp;t=KdyzI3is9bVbeQ22qOu2dg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> on Twitter on Nov. 1, 2020: \u201cIt\u2019s about giving people the resources and support they need so that everyone can be on equal footing, and then compete on equal footing.
