So says virtually every news outlet in the United States. And anyone familiar with the left\u2019s perfunctory use of \u201cultra-conservative,\u201d \u201cfar-right,\u201d \u201chard-right,\u201d or \u201csemi-fascist\u201d to describe those who take positions to the right of the Democratic Party\u2019s latest platform, should be skeptical. <\/p>\n<p>Then again, trying to decipher European elections through the prism of American politics is a frustrating endeavor. But here is a cataloging, as best as I can pull together, of the claims used to portray Meloni as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBSEveningNews\/status\/1573841629622009858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fascist<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Meloni \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/italy-giorgia-meloni-far-right-nationalist-prime-minister-mussolini-rcna48506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bemoans<\/a>\u201d the chronically low birthrate in Italy and wants to implement policies that incentivize people to have more children. Now, I think the prospect of technocratic policy curing low birthrates is dubious, but if incentivizing social behavior is now a fascistic endeavor, what does that say about the left\u2019s agenda?<\/p>\n<p>Meloni defends Europe\u2019s \u201cChristian identity.\u201d The American left acts like the mere mention of \u201cChristian\u201d is xenophobic and fascistic. People get furious when this atheist points out that nearly every Christian-majority nation in the world can boast of democratic institutions and high levels of freedom\u2014with a few exceptions of a few places like Russia\u2014while most non-Christian-majority nations can\u2019t. There are thorny ideological and historical reasons for this reality, but reality it is. When Europe embraces a competing faith\u2014be it secular universalism, multiculturalism, communism, fascism\u2014things tend to go poorly.<\/p>\n<p>Meloni opposes gay marriage. Recall that most Democrats, including Barack Obama, held the same position until 2012. Wrong or right, I don\u2019t recall reporters referring to it as fascistic, or even ideologically \u201cfar-right wing.\u201d Did the definition of fascist change since then? (Gay marriage isn\u2019t recognized in Italy, nor is gay adoption. Same-sex civil unions are, and Meloni opposes them.)<\/p>\n<p>Meloni opposes gay marriage, which isn\u2019t legally recognized in Italy. (Nor is gay adoption.) Instead, there are same-sex civil unions, which offer gay couples nearly the same legal protections as marriage. And Meloni does not want them overturned. Recall that most Democrats, including Barack Obama, held the same position on the matter until 2012. Wrong or right, I don\u2019t recall reporters referring to it as fascistic, or ideologically \u201cfar-right wing.\u201d Did the definition of \u201cfascist\u201d change in the past decade?<\/p>\n<p>Meloni opposes abortion and euthanasia. Every story mentions the protection of life as an evident sign of democratic backsliding. It took some digging to ferret out the official right-wing coalition\u2019s position. Outside nebulous language about life, Meloni promises to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20220923-women-s-rights-denied-abortion-on-the-line-as-italy-s-far-right-eyes-power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fund<\/a> \u201calternatives to abortion.\u201d Using state power to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/25\/heres-why-democrats-have-waged-war-on-pregnancy-centers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shut down<\/a> pregnancy centers (and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/12\/feds-suddenly-remember-to-decry-threats-of-violence-after-ignoring-violent-dobbs-backlash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">looking the other way<\/a> when political terrorists firebomb them) is quite fascisty. Offering pregnant women the means to keep their babies, not so much.<\/p>\n<p>Meloni opposes illegal immigration.<\/p>\n<p>Meloni is a moderate Eurosceptic. (She is also pro-NATO, and supports the West\u2019s military backing of Ukraine and closer relations with Taiwan.)<\/p>\n<p>Meloni is a critic of \u201cwokeness\u201d and the idea of malleable gender identity, the position of basically the entire world until a few minutes ago.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the Tories of Britain or Likud in Israel, contends The Washington Post, Meloni is a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/09\/23\/italy-election-far-right-meloni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">norm-wrecker<\/a>.\u201d Anyone who spends five minutes studying postwar Italian governance will probably tell you the country could use some norm-breaking.<\/p>\n<p>Meloni\u2019s party uses a tricolor flame logo that \u201charks back to an earlier, more extreme political movement formed shortly after Mussolini\u2019s death,\u201d the Post notes. Numerous outlets inform us that the populist right-center coalition, including a party led by former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, has its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6216624\/italy-elects-far-right-giorgia-meloni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">roots<\/a>\u201d in Italy\u2019s postwar fascist movements. In and of itself, this is meaningless. It\u2019s like saying Democrats have their \u201croots\u201d in preserving slavery and segregation. Meloni has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/aug\/11\/scepticism-over-giorgia-melonis-claims-fascism-is-history-in-italian-far-right\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">denounced<\/a> fascism, contending Italy had \u201chanded fascism over to history for decades now.\u201d The National Alliance shed its fascistic views long ago. In the 2000s, its leader Gianfranco Fini <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yadvashem.org\/press-release\/31-october-2005-12-29.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visited<\/a> Yad Vashem in Israel and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/fini-condemns-mussolini-in-break-with-past-b3l3qf38lh7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a> Mussolini\u2019s regime \u201cabsolute evil.\u201d Maybe it was all just a decades-long ruse to gain power, but it\u2019s a context worth noting. Many did not. <\/p>\n<p>Meloni refused to vaccinate her daughter, <a href=\"https:\/\/pagellapolitica.it\/fact-checking\/fulmini-e-covid-19-cosa-non-torna-nei-dati-di-meloni\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arguing<\/a> that the probability of someone aged 0\u201319 dying from Covid-19 is the same as being struck and killed by lightning. (To be fair, it\u2019s probably lower.)<\/p>\n<p>Meloni is, believe it or not, also a fan of Tolkien, and even attended a \u201cHobbit Camp\u201d in 1993, when she was 16. In Italy, The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/21\/world\/europe\/giorgia-meloni-lord-of-the-rings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explains<\/a> in a 1,500-word deep dive, \u201cThe Lord of the Rings\u201d has \u201cfor a half-century been a central pillar upon which descendants of post-Fascism reconstructed a hard-right identity\u201d for people \u201clooking to a traditionalist mythic age for symbols, heroes and creation myths free of Fascist taboos.\u201d Really, a central pillar? I\u2019m not a scholar in Italian politics, but this seems unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Meloni has defended Viktor Orban, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/09\/23\/italy-election-far-right-meloni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the orchestrator of Hungary\u2019s autocratic turn<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Who knows? Perhaps tomorrow Meloni will have the <a href=\"https:\/\/history.howstuffworks.com\/history-vs-myth\/did-mussolini-really-keep-trains-running-on-time.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trains running on time<\/a> and embrace a corporatist economic system like so many \u201cliberal\u201d Eurozone nations. I\u2019m a minarchist at heart, so everyone looks like a fascist to me. More likely, the Italian right will be illiberal within the normal illiberal standards of modern Europe. It will be no more illiberal than \u201cdemocratic\u201d socialist parties, and no less authoritarian than the present German government, which regularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/09\/23\/technology\/germany-internet-speech-arrest.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sends<\/a> police to break down the doors and arrest citizens for saying stupid things on the internet. Like Orban, the Italian right promises to use state power to blunt the European left\u2019s agendas on social policy and immigration, rather than use state power to enforce them.
