Kathy Hochul has urged New York Republicans to leave and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has welcomed new residents to \u201cthe free state of Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In August, 5,838 New Yorkers switched their driver\u2019s licenses to Florida, the highest recorded number for a single month in history, the report found.<\/p>\n<p>From Jan. 1 to Sept. 20, 41,885 New Yorkers have turned in their licenses after officially leaving the state.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, at a campaign event for now newly elected U.S. Rep. Pat Ryan, Hochul <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RNCResearch\/status\/1563698354592387072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cAnd we\u2019re here to say that the era of Trump and [U.S. Rep. Lee] Zeldin and [Dutchess County Executive Marc] Molinaro \u2013 just jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong, OK?\u201d referring to Republicans in the Empire State.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan won a special election in New York\u2019s 19th congressional district, defeating Molinaro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out of town. Get out of town. Because you don\u2019t represent our values,\u201d Hochul said to New York Republicans. \u201cYou are not New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to US Census Bureau <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2021\/2021-population-estimates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a>, roughly 319,020 residents left New York between July 2020 and July 2021. This represented a 1.6% year-over-year loss catapulting New York to the top of the list of state\u2019s leading in population decline. Over the past decade, it\u2019s population loss also contributed to it losing a congressional seat.<\/p>\n<p>From July 2020 to July 2021, Florida gained 211,196 residents. Its population increase over the past decade also led to it gaining a congressional seat.<\/p>\n<p>Among those moving to Florida are former New York police officers and state National Guard members, citing a lower cost of living and Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019 \u201cfreedom first\u201d policies as reasons for doing so.<\/p>\n<p>Last November, the Lakeland Police Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/florida\/nypd-officers-take-up-desantis-offer-and-move-to-florida\/article_1bf64bde-4874-11ec-8c03-bf5ef7240005.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> an initial 14 NYPD officers had left New York City to relocate to the Tampa area town as part of its recruiting campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/11\/13\/nypd-cops-find-respect-warm-welcome-more-money-in-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the New York Post at the time, \u201c&#8217;Many New York City cops are weighing our sub-standard salary against the ever-increasing challenges, scrutiny and abuse, and they&#8217;re voting with their feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the first to join Florida\u2019s newly reestablished Florida State Guard was a former New York State Guard member and former New York resident who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/florida\/new-york-transplant-joins-more-than-1-200-apply-for-400-spots-in-florida-state\/article_c4bea528-f1bf-11ec-83ea-37668a4c3047.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> he moved to the lower-taxed and less regulated \u201cfree state of Florida,\u201d saying DeSantis\u2019 \u201cleadership was the deciding factor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the DeSantis campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/flvoicenews.com\/desantis-campaign-launches-desantis-mugs-for-new-yorkers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched<\/a> \u201cmugs for New Yorkers\u201d who still live in New York. The mugs say, \u201cI\u2019m a New Yorker but I wish my governor was Ron DeSantis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundreds of thousands of New Yorkers have left the blue state to move to the \u2018Free State of Florida,\u2019 but there are still many New Yorkers that have yet to make the trip down south,\u201d the campaign said.
