President Joe Biden recently signed the Inflation Reduction Act, which contains $369 billion for climate initiatives \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/energy-sec-granholm-families-should-use-ev-tax-credits-weatherize-their-homes-finance-solar-panels-to-cope-with-inflation\">including<\/a> $7,500 tax credits for new electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Buttigieg added on Thursday that the nation should invest more heavily in alternate modes of transportation. \u201cCars will always play an important role in our lives, but you should not have to bring two tons of metal with you everywhere you\u2019re going,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has also established the goal of procuring only 100% zero-emission light-duty vehicles by 2027 and will extend the same standard to all vehicles in the federal fleet by 2035, according to another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/06\/09\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-proposes-new-standards-for-national-electric-vehicle-charging-network\/\">fact sheet<\/a> from the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Buttigieg recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/buttigieg-interested-in-california-ban-on-new-gas-cars-as-he-weighs-a-national-policy\">nodded<\/a> to a policy from the California Air Resources Board that will require 35% of new vehicles to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/california-expected-to-ban-sale-of-new-gas-cars\">produce zero emissions<\/a> by 2026 \u2014 a standard that will progressively rise to 100% by 2035. The policy was unveiled days before grid officials requested that residents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/california-asks-residents-to-avoid-charging-electric-vehicles-due-to-blackout-risk-days-after-unveiling-new-gas-car-ban\">lower energy usage<\/a> during peak hours of a heatwave, including by refraining from charging their electric vehicles, in the interest of averting power failure.<\/p>\n<p>Buttigieg nevertheless argued that speed is necessary for an electric vehicle policy. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to make sure that this happens quickly enough to help us beat climate change,\u201d he said during an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxla.com\/news\/the-issue-is-podcast-gavin-newsom-pete-buttigieg-and-melissa-giller\">interview<\/a> with Fox 11 Los Angeles. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to make sure it happens affordably enough that\u2019s it not just wealthy people, but low-income people who most need those gas savings if they can afford the EVs in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Washington, Massachusetts, and Virginia will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/two-more-states-follow-californias-ban-on-new-gas-cars\">follow<\/a> the California Air Resources Board policy in accordance with previously enacted law, although Republicans in the latter state are attempting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ridiculous-edict-virginia-gov-glenn-youngkin-blasts-californias-gas-car-phase-out\">overturn<\/a> the regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging the high cost of electric cars relative to gas vehicles, Buttigieg has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pete-buttigieg-tells-americans-how-they-can-channel-their-pain-at-the-pump\">claimed<\/a> that rising fuel prices would lead more Americans to rely on alternatives. \u201cThe more pain we are all experiencing from the high price of gas, the more benefit there is for those who can access electric vehicles,\u201d he said during a hearing for the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The national average price of gasoline was $2.38 per gallon when Biden assumed office and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gas-prices-are-1-50-higher-since-biden-took-office-cnn-business-america-got-a-raise\">increased<\/a> to $3.53 per gallon by the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
