Johnson, a professor emeritus of anthropology at California State University, Chico, and a major contributor to the eunuch chapter, <a href=\"https:\/\/wesleyyang.substack.com\/p\/4d5257b1-aa65-4131-b24c-dd6081c5451b\">opened<\/a> the session with a history lesson. \u201ceunuch is the oldest recognized gender outside the binary,\u201d said Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>During the history lesson, Johnson said that enslaved people used to be castrated in a similar way to livestock. \u201cSlaves were just another domestic animal,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cSlaves were treated the same way as domestic animals, you castrate the non-breeding populations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson describes eunuchs as an \u201cinvisible gender.\u201d He estimates there are eight to ten thousand self-identified voluntary eunuchs in North America today. \u201cMost present publicly as male, they\u2019re indistinguishable from anyone else on the street,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cSometimes they try to appear androgynous, but there is no other real way they demonstrate publicly that they are other than male.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an attempt to normalize voluntary castration, Johnson compared those seeking it to prostate cancer patients who have been tragically castrated out of necessity. \u201cMen today are also castrated for medical reasons,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cAt least half a million men in North America are currently castrated, whether chemically or surgically, as treatment for prostate cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next, Johnson describes the various subcategories of men seeking voluntary castration. \u201cMen with extreme gender dysphoria; they desire to be not male, to be emasculated but don\u2019t want to be female either,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cThey have a Male-to-Eunuch Gender Dysphoria that is now part of the SoC 8.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second subgroup of men seeking to castrate themselves have a condition known as Body Integrity Dysphoria (BID), which the World Health Organization\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/icd.who.int\/browse11\/l-m\/en#\/http:\/\/id.who.int\/icd\/entity\/256572629\">describes<\/a> as a mental disorder characterized by \u201can intense and persistent desire to become physically disabled in a significant way\u201d that \u201cresults in harmful consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are others who have a feeling that their genitals are not a proper part of their body,\u201d said Johnson, who explains that an implicit definition of Body Integrity Disorder is now included in WPATH\u2019s new Standards of Care 8th edition. \u201cBody Integrity Dysphoria (BID), this is in the Soc 8. It\u2019s also in ICD-11 6C21,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cIt\u2019s there in the ICD as well as the Standards of Care,\u201d he reiterated.<\/p>\n<p>The normalization of the consequences of Body Integrity Dysphoria in the new Standards of Care contradicts statements made by Dr. Marci Bowers, the President-elect of WPATH, who has said that patients with Body Integrity Dysphoria are \u201ckooky\u201d and have \u201cnothing to do with gender identity\u201d in an interview Bowers had with Matt Walsh in The Daily Wire documentary \u201cWhat is a Woman?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The final category of men who seek voluntary castration is described as men with \u201can extreme fetish or paraphilic disorder.\u201d Johnson stresses that men with castration fetishes are not included as part of the new Standards of Care. However, Johnson previously <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17961144\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published research<\/a> that found \u201c[a] large proportion (approximately 40%) of wannabes\u2019 interest in castration was singularly of a fetishistic nature.\u201d \u201cWannabes\u201d here denotes men who have not yet been castrated, but want to be.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of including eunuch as a gender identity is clear: so that they can easily access the insurance benefits that cover \u201cgender-affirming care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 8th version of the Standards of Care (SOC) includes a discussion of eunuch individuals because of their unique presentation and their need for medically necessary gender-affirming care,\u201d reads the introduction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/26895269.2022.2100644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eunuch chapter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of them out there are seeking what they term \u2018eunuch calm,\u2019\u201d said Johnson, who describes this as a desire to reduce both libido and \u201creactive aggression.\u201d \u201cThis is the road rage, the bar fights, the loss of control, losing one\u2019s temper easily,\u201d Johnson explains.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson then dives into the demographics of those who identify as eunuchs, who often have a college education and have experience castrating animals on a farm. \u201cWe have found in looking at the population out there, that a great many of them are very well-educated,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cA lot of them have farm backgrounds, rural backgrounds, that they have witnessed or participated in animal castration, so they know what the procedure is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Johnson shared a slide entitled \u201cThreatened with castration as a child\u201d alongside two statistics from a sample he collected data on.
