Lindsey Graham\u2019s \u201cProtecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To condemn Graham\u2019s bills and Republicans\u2019 \u201cextreme\u201d position on abortion, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-22\/biden-says-catholic-church-less-strict-on-abortion-than-graham?leadSource=uverify%20wall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asserted<\/a> that the allegedly less-extreme Roman Catholic Church allows exceptions for abortions in the case of rape and incest. \u201cMy generic point \u2014 and I happen to be a practicing Roman Catholic \u2014 my church doesn\u2019t even make that argument now,\u201d Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2022\/09\/22\/remarks-by-president-biden-at-a-democratic-national-committee-reception-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> during a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in New York City. \u201cAnd so we\u2019re in a situation where things have changed a lot. But they\u2019ve gotten more extreme in their positions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s statement is demonstrably false. The Catholic Church not only makes no exception for rape and incest, it goes even further than Graham\u2019s 15-week ban, teaching that abortion is morally wrong from the moment of conception. Never has the Catholic Church budged on this ancient teaching.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) endorsed Graham\u2019s bill. \u201cI support your efforts with the \u2018<em>Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term\u00a0Abortions Act<\/em>\u2019 to protect the right to life of unborn babies from 15 weeks\u2019 gestation,\u201d wrote Archbishop William E. Lori,\u00a0chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, in a letter thanking Graham for his bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Catholic Church remains clear and consistent in asserting that true justice demands the right to life, the most basic human and civil right, for <em>every <\/em>child, from conception onward,\u201d Lori said. \u201cNo person\u00a0or government has the right to take the life of any innocent human being, regardless of its stage of\u00a0development.\u201d Lori also added that the USCCB \u201cstrongly agree[s] that there is a federal role for protecting unborn human life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Catechism of the Catholic Church explicitly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/issues-and-action\/human-life-and-dignity\/abortion\/respect-for-unborn-human-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">states<\/a>, \u201cSince the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable.\u201d Furthermore, the Catechism <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicculture.org\/culture\/library\/catechism\/cat_view.cfm?recnum=6077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declares<\/a>, \u201cFormal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>It is this teaching that many bishops point to when denying pro-abortion politicians Holy Communion. For example, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/06\/29\/1108548298\/pelosi-vatican-communion-abortion-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> he would no longer administer the sacrament to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi on account of her radical, anti-Catholic abortion agenda. <\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Biden seems increasingly confused in his Catholic faith, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/252367\/president-biden-catholic-church-abortion-teaching-exceptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flip-flopping<\/a> on when he believes life begins. In the 2012 vice presidential debate, he said \u201clife begins at conception, that\u2019s the Church\u2019s judgment. I accept it in my personal life,\u201d but he refused to \u201cimpose\u201d this view on others.<\/p>\n<p>However, in September 2021 Biden said he did not believe human life begins at conception, after reaffirming his allegiance to the now-overturned <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> decision. Then, after <em>Roe <\/em>was overturned earlier this year, Biden issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/08\/bidens-abortion-order-undermines-scotus-and-democracy-by-seizing-power-from-voters-and-giving-it-to-feds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive order<\/a> to circumvent state laws and promote unlimited abortion. <\/p>\n<p>In response, Archbishop Lori slammed Biden\u2019s use of executive power \u201cto promote and facilitate abortion in our country, seeking every possible avenue to deny unborn children their most basic human and civil right, the right to life,\u201d as \u201cdeeply disturbing and tragic.\u201d Even Pope Francis came out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/251772\/pope-francis-incoherence-biden-supports-abortion-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publicly condemn<\/a> Biden\u2019s support for abortion as \u201cincoheren[t]\u201d with his faith. <\/p>\n<p>Democrats have made abortion a top issue this election cycle, hoping that outrage over the recent Supreme Court <em>Dobbs v. Jackson<\/em>\u00a0ruling will help them in November. Once again, cynical Joe Biden is putting politics and power ahead of his Catholic faith.
