Its leadership has repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/china-will-not-renounce-the-use-of-force-against-taiwan-ccp-white-paper_4655288.html\">said<\/a> that it is willing to use military force to achieve this goal, and has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/china-will-not-hesitate-to-start-a-war-over-taiwan-chinese-general-tells-us-defense-secretary_4525064.html\">threatened<\/a> to start a war over the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan has been a self-governing democracy since 1949, however, and has never been controlled by the CCP.<\/p>\n<p>Formally, the United States recognizes, but does not endorse, the CCP\u2019s position, and the two sides have long agreed that neither side should attempt to unilaterally change the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>Concerning the issue of<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senior diplomats from the United States and China met Sep. 23 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.
