{"id":165511,"date":"2021-02-23T18:17:24","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T23:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=165511"},"modified":"2021-02-23T18:44:02","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T23:44:02","slug":"cultural-appropriation-is-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cultural-appropriation-is-good\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Cultural Appropriation\u2019 Is Good"},"content":{"rendered":"<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\"><div class=\"mashsb-box\"><div class=\"mashsb-count mash-medium\" style=\"&quot;\"><div class=\"counts mashsbcount\">8<\/div><span class=\"mashsb-sharetext\">SHARES<\/span><\/div><div class=\"mashsb-buttons\"><a class=\"mashicon-facebook mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.conservativenewsdaily.net%2Fbreaking-news%2Fcultural-appropriation-is-good%2F\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-twitter mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=&amp;url=https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=165511&amp;via=ConservNewsDly\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-subscribe mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"#\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Subscribe<\/span><\/a><div class=\"onoffswitch2 mash-medium mashsb-noshadow\" style=\"display:none\"><\/div><\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                <div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div><\/aside>\n            <!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/GettyImages-1132036617-1200x800-1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span>One of the central areas of focus for those who engage in \u201ccancel culture\u201d is the notion of \u201ccultural appropriation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This refers to the adoption of parts of one culture by members of another culture, and is viewed as especially controversial by many when members of a \u201cdominant\u201d culture appropriate from \u201cdisadvantaged\u201d or \u201cminority\u201d cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This has devolved into condemnation and outrage every time so-called \u201cwhite culture\u201d references or engages with any element \u2014 real or otherwise \u2014 of another \u201cnon-white\u201d culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last week, model and reality TV star Kendall Jenner was<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/woke-mob-attacks-kendall-jenner-for-cultural-appropriation-of-tequila\"><span>accused<\/span><\/a> <span>of cultural appropriation after she launched a tequila brand, with her announcement criticized as \u201cgentrification\u201d of Mexican culture, with Jenner guilty of \u201ctaking from local Mexican artisans and profiting off our traditions and agricultural business,\u201d despite only visiting \u201cCabos and Puerto Vallarta for vacation spots.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>More recently, the Cherokee Nation said it had \u201crequested that Jeep \u2018retire\u2019 the name of its best-selling sport utility vehicle and called for a discussion with the automaker on \u2018cultural appropriateness.\u2019\u201d Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cherokee-nation-asks-jeep-to-drop-name-of-top-selling-vehicle-saying-it-does-not-honor-us\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a> <span>in a statement, \u201cI think we\u2019re in a day and age in this country where it\u2019s time for both corporations and team sports to retire the use of Native American names, images and mascots from their products, team jerseys and sports in general.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When it comes to cultural appropriation, the counter-argument usually focuses on the idea that the usage of names or products deemed to be solely owned by one culture is not, in fact, cultural appropriation. For example, tequila isn\u2019t uniquely Mexican, with some arguing that it was the Spanish conquistadors who first distilled agave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, in some ways this argument accepts the premise of the radical Left, in that cultural appropriation is bad, but that these aren\u2019t valid examples of such appropriation. Instead, we should understand and advocate for the truth: that cultural \u201cappropriation\u201d is both natural and good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is the case for three reasons. Firstly, the entire concept of cultural appropriation relies upon the false view that cultures are distinct and separated, with every element of each siloed culture unique to its one society or civilization. In reality, the lines between human cultures are irredeemably blurred, with multiple cultures sharing multiple traditions, items, and ideas. Some cultures grew out of others, and some \u2014 as is human nature \u2014 engulfed others. With the constant movement and interaction of humans on a global scale, there is simply no such thing as a single \u201cpure\u201d culture from which to appropriate. More accurately, cultural appropriation is how cultures develop in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Secondly, it\u2019s false to argue that one single culture \u201cowns\u201d anything which can then be appropriated. Unlike land or physical objects, it\u2019s impossible to take \u2014 with or without permission \u2014 words, traditions, or concepts. Tequila, for example, is not owned by any one person or culture, and so there is no-one from whom it can be appropriated. Similarly, outside of copyright law, no culture can claim single ownership of a word or collection of words.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Finally, the \u201cappropriation\u201d of positive elements of another culture should be viewed as a sincere form of developmental flattery on a global scale. As a species, we have developed as the single greatest power on the planet because we built upon the culture of others. Was it appropriation when the first early human discovered tools and his neighbors soon followed? Was it appropriation when the Romans developed indoor plumbing and areas never conquered by their empire adopted this revolutionary sanitation concept? Is it appropriation when one part of the world becomes famous for creating a certain form of beverage and someone else decides to enter the market?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These three reasons show both that cultural appropriation in the form condemned by the radical Left doesn\u2019t exist, and that the interaction between cultures is uniquely responsible for everything we enjoy as a species today.<\/p>\n<p><span>Most reject supposed cultural appropriation out of guilt or historical ignorance, viewing it as a power struggle or an example of cultural disrespect. While we should unanimously condemn disrespect in the form of bigotry \u2014 for example, overtly mocking cultures and their traditions \u2014 we should also accept that the adoption of cross-cultural elements is not only a reality of humanity, but an entirely positive one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Ian Haworth is an Editor and Writer for The Daily Wire.
